700 jobs? I would think that is where you are going wrong straight off the bat.

There are loads of companies hiring at the moment, it's just more competitive than a few years ago. You need to tailor your applications and make yourself stand out. I'm looking at moving jobs at the moment. Not hugely qualified or experienced but applied for five positions in the last week and have interviews scheduled for three positions, waiting to hear back from a phone interview on another. I'm making an effort to ensure that everything the job description demands is in some way reflected in my CV and cover letter.

It is completely quality, not quantity.

Does 'applying for 700 jobs' mean 'firing off 700 cv's'? That's not applying. That's clicking a mouse.

Because 700 applications in three months is an incredible amount.

And you also said you will apply for anything as long as its full-time. That's not much sign of selecting jobs based on your suitability or other relevant criteria.

    700 jobs?

What area are your qualifications or experience in? That seems an enormous amount of jobs for someone to be qualified for in just a 3 month period.

If you are just sending CVs to jobs that you are not a match for then they are probably just being binned.

I'm an idiot? I've got every single job I've ever applied for since I was 16. At this point people come looking for me. I've been in continuous employment for 24 years now, public, private and self.

    :)

It's advice you're looking for. If you calm yourself down a bit you might get it.

Oh, if I were you I'd have somebody else check over the spelling and punctuation in those applications...

    ;)

I'm not trying to be funny or smart, and I appreciate you're probably typing quickly or on your phone, but there have been a few spelling / grammar mistakes that you've made in this thread. Are you getting someone to proof read your letters for you? Have you checked out stream in swords?

I work in IT and actively looking at the moment so have a good idea of what is out there and the number of positions. What kind of jobs are you applying for and in what area of IT? What kind of experience and certs do you have?

well you're a bit lucky in that department aren't you

I was in the same company since i was 14 for 10 years and received a great redundancy package.

Because of that i only had one interview and never had to make a CV in my whole life..so im a bit new to this but my cv was done up quite well its just i don't have the experience in IT

I have the Comptia A+,Network + and MCSA in Windows 7

Im applying for helpdesk and any entry level jobs i can find

I would also be interested in this.

My brother has his A+, N+, Server+, (a security cert which I cant recall the abbreviations, its an entry level ethical hacker cert anywho) and his CCNA and basically he is in the same boat as fletch here. Applying for jobs and nobody is interested.

I thought IT was supposed to be crying out for workers? Is he in the wrong 'division' of IT or is lack of experience that much of a killer?

There are lots of IT jobs out there. A lot of companies are looking for a degree though in a related field when reviewing workers cvs.

Maybe your frustration/desperation is painted all over your cover letter? The only other reason i can think of why you got no reply from 700 job applications is that you sent them all to McDonalds and they want experienced people there. Do you have the right contact details?

Seriously, there is something not adding up. I have experience in this area if you want help, pm me and i'll take a look at your cv.

There are plenty of entry level helpdesk roles out there from what I've seen (not as many as you might think given the number of vacant IT jobs in general, but still). If you have these certs plus some experience I think you just need to re-think your process and approach to your applications. As I said earlier, make sure you work to provide solid evidence of your experience for each aspect of the job description.

I run an IT company in Dublin, I have looked at taking on someone through Job Bridge before however the big issue I found is everyone who applied had no real interest in the role. I spoke to some friends in the industry and one person who they actually took on through job bridge walked out after 30 minutes.

The big problem I find is finding someone who actually has an interest in IT instead of people who have done training but cant actually do anything outside of following a manual.

I personally dont care about college or certifications, Some of the best IT people I have ever met were self thought.
If you are truely interested in IT make sure you show it on your C.V.
Personal projects whether it be setting up a website, running your own LAMP server, setting up your own freepbx phone system, anything!

One of the most impressive CV's ive seen was a 18 year old kid, no certs, no professional experience. He built websites for family companies, he helped out those companies with IT, he changed the OS on his laptop monthly (linux, hackintosh etc), he ran DD-WRT on his router and most impressive was he ran a counterstrike game server that he kept patched and modded.
From that I could see he was truly interested.

One last thing, Never send a CV without some sort of cover letter or at least a few words in the email. I wont even look at a CV if its just a blank email with a CV attached, Infact most companies spam filters will just block the whole email because of that!

You may need to cast net bit wider be bit more open to jobs in I T but in areas associated with it and being outside it. Not only full time any kind of contract. You need to be bit more open to it think outside box. Sending cv's/applications is one thing but getting interviews is another and so getting a job is a different matter.

There is too much competition in the jobs market but it all about selling ypurself and making contacts/networking. Experience and education and qualities/skills is only half of it. Suitability to the job and company is important too. Would you travel or move for a job or further study or do a jobbridge?

Would that offer be open to another out of work individual i.e. me? :D I am having no luck at all.

Lack of experience can be a real killer, However if your brother has all those certs I would be interested in meeting him!

Back to the point at hand though. Yes companies are hiring but most are completely unrealistic by wanting grad students with 2+ years of experience. This is especially insane considering this country is going through INSANE amounts of brain drain with the recession.
