    Hi guys,

I'm currently renovating a 'fixer-upper' in Roscommon and looking to paint the corrugated metal roof in the deep red that you see on many barn roofs done in around rural Ireland. Would anyone recommend a trusted brand of paint and if there are any Roscommon/Longford locals reading, where would be a good place to buy some.

    Thanks in advance.

It's called red oxide paint. Any good hardware or co op should have it. Can't think of what I used last year but someone on here will give a couple of names. Are you going to paint it or spray it.

    Hi Sea12,

Thanks for the reply. I was just going to use a fluffy roller to apply it. Do you know if there is a separate primer and overcoat or is it an all in one paint?

    Thanks.

You should power was it first then use a primer if necessary. One coat of paint should be ok. There are special rollers with the groves you can buy for it.

    Sea,

    cheers

Syn-Oxide advertised in the Journal most weeks. Also "Castle" brand oxide is good, I find. Watch out and don't step backwards off the edge, or through a Perspex sheet.

    Hi Iver,

Thanks for the recommendations, at least I have something to go on now and can start going around the local hardware stores. :) and I'll be extra careful! :)

Ring Castle Paints in Tullamore, they're the experts and most helpful.

You don't need a special roller just a normal sweeping brush and away you go.

I would think twice though about red as it is a bit of a blot on the landscape to be honest compared to a more subtle grey or green.

How many gallons would I need for a 60 X 80 and 10' on the sides?
    Is it okay to spray?
I have a compressor and plenty of hose.

You will need about 45 gallons , you cannot thin oxide very much, no more than 10 % white spirits added, or it won't cover properly. You Will need a mixer with a shaft long enough to reach the bottomof a 4 gallon drum,to fit into an electric drill. Its not easy to get a spray gun to put on paint this thick. You need the roof well pressure washed and bone dry. You need a dry day and might with no dew or mist at night , or you Will get a whitish bloom on the paint.

    Hi guys,

I rang a building providers in Boyle today and they quoted me €105 for 20 litres of red oxide, the brand was Agri something, didn't catch the other part. Is this an ok price?

    Thanks

    Hi guys,

you may be able to help me here. One of the local hardware stores is saying I'm best going for the syn oxide as it's trusted and used a lot on a lot of the barns and that. He's says is just comes in one shade of red, my preference is for the deep darker tone of red you see on barns, does anyone know what shade of red the syn-oxide is...?

Also does anyone have experience using it, is it ok to apply with a corrugated shaped roller?

    many thanks
