Help with Self Cover Buttons

OK so my girlfriend lost a button off a dress she really liked.

I did a bit of Googling thinking I might be able to get a replacement button somewhere but didn't have any joy.

I figured though that maybe I would get some of those self cover buttons and some fabric separate and get someone to make the buttons for me.

So I got the buttons in Hickeys and some fabric there too as well as a place in Parnell St. I brought the whole lot to Zipyard on South Anne Street hoping it might be something they'd be able to help out with but the sales person there told me that not only would THEY not be able to help, but probably nobody would.... something about there not being anything on the button to attach the fabric to??? Eh, thread/glue??

So are they right? Is it a lost cause? :( These are the exact buttons I got. http://www.candh.co.uk/products.asp?partno=0173742

If anyone could clear this up it would be a MASSIVE help to me. Cheers

take a button off the card. It should be possible to separate the button into two pieces. The back presses into the front piece after you wrapped the material round it. I usually cut out a little circle, put some stitches round the edge and tighten up round the front piece. The back piece then presses into the front, giving a solid button. I don't know if you can reuse them though

@yellowlabrador Cheers - yeah there a couple of illustrations on the back of the packet that seemed to suggest that's how it's done so I can't understand why they weren't willing/able to help.

If anyone could suggest an alterations/dress making place I could get this done in Dublin that would be super.
