I'm thinking of trying a 18-200+ lens to go on a 600D, any recommendations? I know there'll be compromises, I already have
    - the nifty fifty
    - kit lens
    - Sigma 12-24 wide angle

Not sure if this search link will work:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_st?keywords=canon+lens&qid=1371464518&rh=n%3A560798%2Cn%3A560834%2Cn%3A1104528%2Ck%3Acanon+lens%2Cp_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A182680031%2Cp_n_feature_browse-bin%3A182659031%7C182660031&sort=salesrank

Used that lens, its horrible in every way imaginable

Jack of all trade lens typically do everything badly. It would be nice if that wasn't the case but unfortunately its been true of any such lens I've tried.

The likes of the 24-105 L lens is quite nice and covers a nice useful focal length, but on the cheaper side of things you'll be hard pushed to find anything worthwhile with a huge focal range like that.

you have 12-24 and 50 covered, get the 70-200 f4 and the 24-70 at a later date?

what about 18-105, is there an equivalent to the praised Nikon one?

I want a lens that I won't need to change in one session, can't see myself using only the 70-200

As far as I know the Canon 24-104 is probably the closest match there.

What do you photograph typically? I've done model shoots with my 24-70 lens and not changed it once throughout the shoot. Likewise I've done the same with my 70-200. It totally depends on the location and what you're trying to shoot.

If you shoot wildlife on the other hand you could probably look at something like the 100-400 L which would be as close as you'd get to a one lens solution for that particular style.

Honestly if you're not looking for a one stop lens for all occasions/styles you're probably going to be dissapointed. Also what you gain in terms of focal range you typically trade off in other areas, most often in sharpness. Theres a reason fixed focal length primes are so expensive. They do one thing, but they do it VERY well.

I'm only taking family shots, nothing special... I liked the Nikon 18-105 I used on a D5100 for focus separation and reach was enough. But I was thinking with the 200+ mm, the focal plane will be even better defined at the long end; maybe I'm wrong - it's also affected by the aperture which is 6+ on the cheaper all purpose lenses...

I don't care too much about image quality within reasonable limits; I'm mostly using a DSLR for speed over a digicam, and bokeh.

It sounds like you might be better of with a bridge camera. Somethink like a Canon sx50 would probably cover everything you need. The main advantage of DSLR's are the many lens possibilities and the image quality they can offer. If that doesn't interest you then you're probably using the wrong camera for what you need.

speed, does the sx50 have it?

    bokeh, -||- ?

I also have a canon a710 that hasn't got any use since I got the 600D.

    I ordered The Sigma

I'll let you know how I find it...

Very nice, are they straight out of camera, or post-processed?

With 18 Mpix I don't care about examining pixels at 100% on a monitor, hopefully the Sigma I ordered can get similar results to yours.

Because I shot in Raw they have had to go through Photoshop. Very little processing, maybe a bit of shadows and highlights, and unsharp mask.

Pleased with the lens so far - even though seems to make a humming noise whenever it's on, only noticed 1 week ago, could have been there from the beginning...
