Could be wrong here - but I don't think that you can simply change the head gaskets on these when they go wrong - I think you need to replace the engine.

Have a look on Toyotas owners club (Avensis or Rav 4 sections etc) or the Lexus equivalent for more info.

Very common issue on these cars - Toyota (don't know the story with Lexus) in the UK even has a policy of repairing any 2.2 D4D that develops Head gasket failure free of charge if under 7 years old and less then 111,000 miles.

Will see if I can get a link up on it for you

Did you try Toyota/Lexus to see if they will do anything for you?

140, 000 miles on the clock and its a uk import . I dont fancy my chances tbh . Im leaning towards just replacing the lump with one from a scrapyard with a view to gettin rid of it soon after . Seems to be very common problem with them . Wish Id known that before I bought obviously.

Which is the reason why such examples could be in a scrapyard. Either hear the engine running or walk away

Oh my engine still runs like a dream and youd never know anything was wrong with it only iv to keep topping up the expansion tank before every trip. Engine from a crashed one might be best bet methinks hopefully low mileage .

I know these have major issues with the head but are you 100percent certain its a head gasket failure. We have seen other issues that can show similar symptoms

Would it not be better to delve further before assuming you need an engine?

Cooling system is being over pressurised and its dumping the coolant out the pressure relief valve on the expansion tank . The amount of pressure were talkin just has to be compression from cylinders . .
