Dublin Airport VOR (DAP). Why the need?

As navaids like VORs are falling out of favour when it comes to approach guidance systems, I've wondered why they installed the DAP VOR (end of R28) a couple of years ago, given the good ILS. A costly piece of infrastructure but I've never heard of it actually being used (as in "cleared DAP VOR approach R10!").

What was the reasoning behind its installation? We now have four VORs within a 10-mile radius (DUB, DAP, WST and BAL).

Only did a VOR approach onto 28 a few weeks ago ;)

Can I ask why not an ILS?

Ask yourself this what happens if the ILS is U/S? What would you do?

Because the ILS's to 28 and 10 were being replaced at the time.

Would be interesting trying to do an ILS to 28 using the WST vor don't ya think. VOR's are not just used for enroute flying.

That was the first thing I thought of alright but there are many major airports that don't have that backup either, and others probably already had the VORs in place historically. I just thought VORs were on the way out.

You might be thinking of NDBs. Many of those are being decommissioned.

Non precision approaches are always good practice. They are a favourite of sim instructors if they think a session is going a bit too well.

I think the answer is self explanitory :)

Not only did it give a backup navaid for the main runways at Dublin for instrument approaches it also provided another DME for RNAV for those who don't have GPS on board....
