Where to buy big bags of glitter / coloured stones?

    Hi all

I have a vintage glass graduated cylinder I rescued from
an abandoned laboratory several years ago.

I would like to make this into a garden feature for my parents
and their grandchildren. My dad had the idea of filling it with
layers of glitter and coloured stones. It's a big item, 5 liters
in volume, about 1 meter / 4 feet tall. It's basically a bigger
    version of this item:

I guess, I'd need about 3 or 4 sugar bag sized bags of glitter
and the same again of beads or stones.

Anyone know a place where I can buy this stuff online?

I had a look around ebay but they want €30 for a 500g bag of glitter.

    Thanks

Maybe you could use coloured sand?

While looking for bulk glitter online, I did consider coloured sand, it is also
available at similar prices to glitter.

On Amazon looking at sand and glitter options, I found a toy called
Hama Beads. These are small plastic beads that are arranged in frames
to make pictures, a bit like painting by numbers.

These appear ideal for my project. They will be durable, weather resistant,
and if the glass cylinder gets broken, the beads can be played with,
whereas the glitter or sand would just blow away!

Also, I am considering upgrading the project to a water feature.

I'd drill a small hole in the base of the cylinder and connect a pump that
would run water up the cylinder, through the inert beads and out the top.

I've ordered a set of the Hama beads, that come in a tray organized
    by colour:

I'll see how much of the cylinder these beads fill. Also I can add other
items as filler. The site of the factory that the glass cylinder came out
of is now a shopping centre. There is an Art and Hobby store there,
so by way of a tribute to the former site, I am going to add a few bags of
    marbles from the shop.

How times change, once a bustling factory with a busy laboratory,
analyzing samples from all over the world, now a shopping centre,
    struggling to stay in business!

I'll also add a layer or two of the Lego brick my brothers and I had
when we were kids. I still have all of it in the attic. This will be a nice touch
I think - the toys our parent gave us, now returned to the family home,
maybe to intrigue a new generation with colour and creativity.
