Win 8 downgrade to Win 7

I made the mistake of getting win 8 on my girlfriends laptop when buying it for her.

    She hates it.

I've put a win 7 shell on it, but it's the charm bar annoyance that keeps driving her crazy. Anytime she slides her finger from the right on the trackpad, the stupid charm bar comes up.

It's beyond a joke in fairness, I've even tried to use it and it's so frustrating.

There's no way of disabling the charm bar feature that we can see and therefore I think maybe I'll have to get win 7 for her and install it.

It this an easy procedure to do? I read some stuff about it being a very complicated procedure to downgrade from 8 to 7?

u should install start8 it has a windows 7 shell and you can remove the charm bar under the options menu, would be less hassle then a downgrade maybe give it a try first?

Will start8 get rid of that trackpad annoyance when sliding in from the right?

If so, then I'd like to try that first. Can you provide a link for me to that please?

You can try it for free, http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

It's 3.75 euro to buy. Worth it though, it's what i've been using.

cool. I just watched a youtube video and I says it gets rid of the charm bar when you move the mouse to the right hand side of the screen(I already have that disabled from classic shell), but can you see if the charm bar comes up if you slide your finger in from the right on the trackpad?

Because that's the thing I want to get rid of completely.

I'm using a mouse but, none of that crap comes up on my desktop.

Yeah, but i think it's on laptops when you use the trackpad that the stupid charm bar comes up when you slide your finger in from the right.

It actually makes using the pad impossible without wanting to smash your fist through the screen.

I'll give start8 a go later tonight when I'm on the laptop and report back.

I'm going to predict though that it won't get rid of the problem :)

honestly i never found this to be a problem though ive heard of it frequently. on default settings ive never accidentally switched apps or hit the charm bar on the trackpad though im aware of how to.

probably the most useful thing to know to avoid it: you do not need to scroll from the far right of the trackpad anymore. Trackpads are now multi-touch. Simply take 2 fingers anywhere on the screen and slide them up/down to scroll. If you take your fingers up to the top or bottom edge of the trackpad, you can even get continuous scrolling to enable, which really cuts down on repetitive motion. You'll notice when you take your 2 fingers to drag/scroll, its opposite to the direction of travel, just like the Mac OS, with the original intent that its more natural (like sliding around a sheet of paper).

Given that I rarely use the apps in windows 8, theres usually no apps open for the app-switch to jump to.

Either way it hasnt made my trackpad impossible to use. I suppose there could be some vairances between OEMs, for instance the trackpad on a Lenovo will automatically "sleep" while the keyboard is being used, to avoid cursor-hopping. Other brands will require you to hit a button/Fn+combo to turn it on/off. Important thing to note, given there are a special breed of finnicky customers out there who can't even tolerate going through the trouble of even tapping a button (and yes, thats been a real argument before). Trackpad size also factors in. Most OEMs are hanging in there with quite small pads, where others are starting to make them a tad bigger to facilitate the full range of multi touch

I understand this, but the problem with the trackpad arises when your typing(for example) and then you move back down to the pad to move the mouse. You have to be extra careful not to slide in from the right or else the bar appears. Believe me it's ridiculous when you see how easy it happens.

read my edit. for an HP look for a square icon in the corner of the trackpad with an LED near it - double-tap it until the LED goes Amber. for other models it is frequently a special function on the F# keys that can either simply be turned on/off by pressing the right F key or Fn+F#, and some OEMs have smartpads that know when youre typing. Buyer beware: I strongly encourage users to actually play with the models before buying, so they can run across these issues.

If it's a Synaptics touchpad, you can disable it in the Mouse control panel applet. Can't remember exactly where it is, but it's certainly there. I think it's something along the line of swipe gestures.

I have a laptop and had the charm bar come up after you install start8 but you have to go into the options after you install it to disble the charm bar yourself, it doesnt select It automatically so make sure you remember to disable it yourself

The simple fix to the last thing you said: dont go fumbling for the trackpad from the right. my fingers always make their way back to the pad from center. But, this trackpad is centered, im aware most OEMs offset theirs left now. All the same, my palms rarely leave their palmrest points, underneath the keyboard. when going between type and track my palm just swivels while I bring the fingers back over the trackpad.

yes, but does it still come up if you slide in from the right? I know it fixes the charm bar appearing when you move to the right side of the screen with the mouse.

Well it never appeared since I installed start8 so I guess the answer is no

Installed and configured Start8, but the charm bar still comes up when i slide in from the right on the trackpad.

Probably just going to have to downgrade it to win 7 because it's just a complete waste of time even thinking about it at this stage.

The trackpad is a synaptic, but I can't disable the sliding gestures. :(

Seems absurd to spend $100+ on something thats as simple as stop swiping your pad from the right, tbh

Just remove, or configure the trackpad software...

Ok, found a fix for it!

Decided to just install a trackpad driver for win 7!

It gave me the option of disabling the slide in from the edge gestures, so problem fixed thank god.
