A magpie hunting.... not hunting a magpie!

I was working on a roof yesterday and the field below us was alive with rabbits with the odd pigeon and magpie landing in the same field every so often. As we were working we heard a young grazer squealing and when we looked down there was a magpie flapping around the rabbit pecking at it. As the rabbit was trying to crawl away the magpie was really going for it and was pecking and clawing at the rabbit and the both of them eventually disappeared into the ditch at which point the rabbit let out one last squeal.

I'm sure we have all seen magpies hunting for nests along hedgerows before but this was the first time I saw a magpie hunting down a rabbit.

    Anyone else seen this before?

Yes and no, seen four of them together doing exactly the same with a young hare a right few years ago.

I've seen magpie mobbing other birds, cats, dogs, and any animal that gets too close or simply pisses the magpie off (:D), but never seen one continuously attack an animal.

Yeah it was a first for me and the guy with me. But this magpie was clearly going for the kill.

Wonder if it did kill it. Cannot believe a rabbit would not run like feck. Enough to escape a magpie.

This afternoon I saw from my bedroom window a magpie drag a chick from a nest and peck away at it. I'd never seen this before but knew magpies did such. Best part was the missus saw it too('oh god, leave it alone, shoo, get away, its not listening to me'), and she now wants me to aid the survival chances of smaller songbirds in the area by whatever means.....

Oh how the masses only know they're bleeding when they put their hands in the wound! Education is truely an eye opener - if only more people would open their eyes & minds we would avoid a lot of headaches!!

Get her trapping lad quick! ;)

Magpie's are vermin. My uncle has a cage (similar idea to above) and regularly catches them..

I'm taking a guess, but based on your username, you walking into the hunting forum, is a bit like a Muslim cleric waking into a gay bar. Your perfectly safe, but your probably not going to like what you see. I would turn around and walk out the door if I was you.

Of course, you may be just be a cleric in the closet, and if so, pull up a stool and order a babysham for yourself! :-)

I keep chickens down the bottom of the garden, and last month or so, been getting no eggs. Fecking magpies and grey crows been taking em it turned out.

Put a netting over the coop, threw out the larsen trap, and managed to get a grey and a magpie first day, but they stayed clear of the trap after that.

Took em a while to figure out I had the shottie as well though :-) 4 grey crows less and I'm back in eggs now. Theivin barstewards

Does anyone seriously believe that magpies have only recently started preying on other animals?

Their behaviour is only what millions of years of evolution has proven to be a successful strategy for their species.

They don't hate the rabbitt or any other animal, like we don't hate cattle or sheep just because we eat them for food.

Dont like magpies cause l think their vermin, but l still wouldn't trap them or anything like that. Im not here to give a leature to ye (just cause of my username) l simply asked a question.

Ok fair enough we just have so many antis trolling from time to time , don't judge what we do till u experience what we do

Okay folks, let's keep this on topic and civil.

Everyone is welcome to post here. As long as people stick to the rules, and know what they are "getting into" when posting here. This forum is for hunters, and sports shooters. The discussion of hunting as an ethical or morally right pursuit is off limits as it's 100% legal.

The discussion of certain issues within hunting is permitted once the rules are not broken as are questions about hunting. Such as the use of traps, etc.

@ stop animal cruelty - Please understand that the majority of people against animal cruelty come on here to troll, and make accusations, and the term "sick in the head" has actually been used (among other not so subtle comments). Your username only heightens the regular posters apprehension. So they become immediately more skeptical.

I'v seen hunting going on, I know people who hunt, I am in a postition to judge it. I simply dont like it. I can go on but l'm not gonna. Like l said in my previous posts, l came on this to ask a question, l didnt come on to give a lecture. In fact my question still hasn't been answered but got the "oh this ones a troll" vibe. Im not a troll & tbh I know ld get a bit of a bolli*ing if l threw my views about hunting on this forum not interested in doing that.

Maybe ye shouldnt judge the username til ye know what the user has to say? :p

Ya I understand that but l honestly didnt come on this to troll etc. cba getting into a "fight" abou the whole thing, l dont like that on boards. I just asked a question. That was it. Some people over reacted over nothing.

The hunters I know wouldn't be all that keen on cruelty. There's more behind a 'clean kill' than pride in a good shot.

There's no tragedy in the sudden end of a prey animal's life. It's the inevitable end.

    I simply dont like it.
    As per forum rules;
This is a hunting forum so if you're anti-hunting, we recommend that you don't post and don't read any posts; you are going to be offended. .
Maybe ye shouldnt judge the username til ye know what the user has to say? :p
It's kinda hard not to with a username such as your one. It would be very much like me going onto the A&PI forum with a username like "kill all animals".
Some people over reacted over nothing.
Appreciate the comment, but again the username and a long, long history of trolling, and abuse has people cautious. We try not to pre-judge, but it's human nature.

Getting back on topic. This incident has nothing to do with hunters or people. It's nature at it's very basic. However it's an interesting topic so let's not get too distracted with discussion of usernames, morality, etc. relating to hunting.

Bar the rabbit the rabbit is dead.

I was "lol" ing at the username as said figured it was another troll but I will hold back my views there.

As for "the poor rabbit" if it wasn't for the conservation methods of hunters controlling vermin there wouldn't be too many "poor rabbit"'s abut..

I've seen antis and I wouldn't want to give you my view on them :)

Mags are cute heors.. I see them at the sea line where all along all I saw were greys .. they are picking up on what the greys have been at for years..

To ans ur question the steel mesh cage is a common method of trapping a magpie , buy using there teratorial instincts against them ! Bringing a magpie into another area , cause magpies in that area to attack or try to run the call bird out of it area , ending up with them in the trap .

Thanks for visiting ! Call anytime if ya have a hunting related question
