Verbally abused at work, should I report it?

had f****t shouted at me by a customer a number of times. The same customer took something outside the door without paying and then brought it back. There's zero chance of action as I don't know who the person was and there was no camera, but should I report it anyway, just to put it on record?.

Horrible thing to happen. Sympathies to you.
Always report and keep a record. Were there witnesses? (other staff). If so, they might also report it. You may not know who the culprit is now but who knows, in a few days/weeks time you might find out. Either way, your employer has a duty of care to you and if you don't officially tell them they have no obligation to act.
As well as that, this "charmer" is very likely up to the same antics somewhere else and every little record may be useful at a later stage.

Take care - and well done for speaking out.

That's pretty shit, sorry you were subjected to it. You should definitely make your employer aware, should the customer come back and kick up again it could be beneficial to have a record of it happening before.

Thanks, I had thought that 'being a ******' was ok. Other staff were horrified. Shows that there's still some incredible ignorance out there, although this guy was probably quite underdeveloped in the cerebral dept. .

I'll note the time and date.

Is it too much to ask whether such incidents could or should be reported to the Gardai, even if in this instance, they can do nothing, just to make them aware of issues?

Yes, report it to your manager and make a note of the time and date of the incident.

Disgusting incident but not all that surprising given the amount of scummers knocking about the place.

These issues can of course be reported to the gardaí! Any incident where a person has been abused-verbally or other wise and where an individual feels/felt unsafe, and discriminated against should absolutely be reported! My sympathies to you, what an awful thing to happen!

If he stole something then I see no issue with a garda report

If you see it as a case of harrassment then perhaps it should be reported to the garda lgbt liaison officer - they may not do anything this time but it could be a case where if there is continued harrassment then they can.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.
