Im going to be in KL for work with my wife and 2 year old and we have some time off for the Hari Raya holiday.

Wondering if there is any recommendations for a trip from the thursday to the Monday from there (7th - 12th August)? Not really looking for a beach resort or one of the popular destinations. More of a "different" SE Asia city break/cultural trip type of destination

    Thanks in advance :)

Last year I had a few days free in KL.

Booked a Air Asia flight to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Borneo. About €70 return, great value considering 2 1/2 hours each way. No separate visas, currency etc as same country. Also same time zone.

See separate thread re KK a few weeks ago.

You could fly to Siem Reap in Cambodia, roughly a two hour flight. See Angkor Wat and other temples. Its a great city. As August is technically rainy season, numbers will be down and it would be a great time to go. You might only get one shower a day- you will be used to these heavy showers from KL at that stage!
KK in Sabah is a great destination too as already mentioned, with great markets, nice islands to visit in the national park and great history.
Maybe Ubud in Bali for culture could be another option, though could be considered quite touristy.

Just be careful there seems to be a 'do not travel' warning for eastern Borneo/Sabah at the moment.

Brunei is a possibility although quite boring, small and over-priced

Another option if you dont want to fly is a bus trip to Singapore or Penang.

Last March went to Penang with Plusliner Coach, http://www.plusliner.com.my/

About €100 for two nights incl coach, hotel, and tours with local guide in private car.
