Bootcamps - opinion

    I started a bootcamp a couple of months ago.

    I've trained myself on and off in the gym and done crossfit for a while.

    I'm doing the bootcamp with Urban Fit Crew. What are people's opinions of these types of training? It's quite different to the likes of Crossfit, which is more structured and there's alot more instruction. Also, it's very continuous i.e. out of 60 minutes, you'd be exercising for 50-55 minutes.

    I get the impression that it's not the optimal use of 60 minutes of training Like, we're constantly alternating between exercises, to the point that most people aren't doing them properly -e.g. we'd do pressups for 30 seconds, then roll over, do plank, roll over, do burpees, and then repeat 4/5 times.

    I'm continuing to do it as the weather's quite nice and I don't like being stuck indoors on a nice day. Also, it's good fun and less serious than Crossfit.

    However, I wonder is it only something to burn some calories, or are there other benefits to this type of workout?

    The main benefit is motivation and having someone make you work.

    Bootcamp = movement = energy expenditure
    Not much more than that really

    So if you want to expend calories / improve endurance for bootcamping / socialise outdoors / enjoy bootcamps then it's fine.

    If you have a defined goal(s) other than the above yes you'd be better spending your time at something else e.g. get stronger/build muscle then do strength training, run 10k then improve running technique + running training etc

    They'll have different energy expenditures but this is more down to the instructor and the intensity of the class and all other things like location, cost, times etc come into your decision.

    But instead of this big thing between which is a better workout (though you should never sacrifice form), pick the one you'll stick with or given your goals fits it more.

    I went to do some weights yesterday, having done bootcamp last couple of weeks and no gym work.

    However, I could barely do alot of the exercises (e.g. overhead press or dips) as I had aches & twinges all over the place. Not just normal DOMS, but worrying pains that felt like I'd done some damage.

    I feel alot of this may have been due to my last bootcamp session during which we did circuits of burpees, pressups, various types of jumps, situps etc.. each for a minute.

    It seemed the point was just to burn calories, but I wonder if that's wise to do with exercises that actually require some technique e.g. pressups?

    I agree, I did about 3 months doing that sort of cráp, and I felt the same. I was using such poor form on about everything, because I was a bit lagged by the 4th minute.

    The group I did it with started getting a lot of complaints about it, because no one was progressing, and just getting injured. Eventually, the company brought in a rule that the PT has to do the session too, and not just stand there giving orders for ridiculous, ill-thought out, unintelligent workouts. All of a sudden, everything became a lot better - structure to the workouts, proper variation, rather than a thrashing.
