hi can anyone tell me where midge flies live, and is there any thing that can be done to get rid of them?
I'm been driven mad with clouds of them most evenings. its got to the stage that the kids cant even play out side after 6/7pm.
i live in the country, but we seem to be the only house in the area thats affected. any help would be appreciated.

I know they can be annoying but they are key part of the local wildlife, for example food for swallows and other birds who would be feeding chicks at the moment! You could get bug spray that you put on yourself!

Another thread asking how are over rid of wildlife. I remember a radio show many years ago when they said that the listeners questions were either how to get rid of, or prevent, wildlife in their gardens or how to attract them. More often than not it was the same animals for both scenarios.

Midges are an important part of our ecosystem. Usually they do no harm and often are not midges at all but other small flying insects. Try a standard insect repellent on the kids before they go out, if it is a concern.

Spray some "jungle formula" on your kids - worked well for me on safari in various parts of Africa over the years.

Citronella oil works for me. Mix some with body lotion, and apply to back of ears, back of knees etc. If you are really being eaten by the wee beasts, spread liberal amount over exposed areas.
