    Whats that about hindsight?

That's it in a nutshell! I was a member for two years post the luxuries being built and sure half the club house was rarely used! Crazy stuff!!

    Whats that about hindsight?

    Indeed.

But people on committees and members at AGMs find it easier to go along with "group think".

It takes a balanced board / committee of independently minded individuals plus courage and hard work to challenge popular ideas rather than go along with an often misguided / uninformed majority.

This applied as much to failed commercial companies as it does to golf clubs, whom, unlike governments, don't have the capability to be bailed out on the strength of future years' taxes!

Agreed. Blazers looking for a legacy "Look what we built during my captaincy".

Look at what you've done to the Golf Club !!

A prime example of long term planning and fiscal restraint might be Balcarrick? Modest clubhouse, refurb of main areas (shower areas) in the long term- it's debt free.

The decisions, led by the committee and ultimately underwritten by the members in general meeting are what caused the problem - not just the "blazers".

By choosing members for committee and then going along with their proposals (just like choosing a government) - ultimately we get what we deserve.

If we make bad choices and take high risks, we have to pay the price - otherwise we keep on doing the same old thing ("moral hazard" and all that).

Not very pleasant - but that's life ..... unless you're a government or banker - than the taxpayer will bail you out!

Where does that leave the club though? I'm assuming the new owners can just start up a new one as Lisheen Springs done?

Where does it leave the club? In a great place if you ask me. Debt free other than the annual lease payments and ability to carry on as Hollywood Lakes Golf Club as that wasn't who went into receivership

I've been watching nd looking at Hollywood Lakes news lately.. Last post I see maybe Ye have a new buyer which I hope has come through. Me.. I'm from a club called Woodlands. Since Jan 1 no more.. We have alot in common, Start up progression etc.. but 1 common denominator...DANSKE BANKE. We offered 600k to settle our debt.. Said no, Recievership.. no takers.. Then Allsops.. Sold 650k. If they clear 450k r 500k they will b lucky.. We've tried to lease it back but are told its bought as ag land.
So I hope H.L. lives on in whatever guise.. golfing that is.

If you looked at their website you would have seen that nearly two weeks ago Liam. Not too much interest in H/Lakes on this forum. Last I heard they were looking for contributions of €300 from members for subs to end March. Cash flow has to be a big issue. The bad weather has been on their side. Not alot of people looking to move clubs in the pissing rain. Progress has been very slow and has been damaging to their survival chances. Its one thing having a viable plan with 400 members but that plan wont stack up with only 300.

Ok, Josephine. I got some information from a member which seems like the club is now sold and the members have an offer for ratification. As I'm not a member of the club I won't post any specifics on it.
I'm sure these is plenty of interest in H/Lakes on this forum. :D

Word coming out of EGM is deal is done with new buyer who has signed a 7 year lease agreement with the club. I hear subs this year will be €995. I presume this is to give the club a chance to attract new members. With some form of stability in place now I reckon they have a decent chance.

Hope so nobody benefits with the closure of the club .

Except, perhaps, the other clubs in the area that are fighting to survive in a shrinking golf market?

No one wants to see individual clubs failing but the realities are that there is less discretionary spending available and there are too many golf clubs competing for a declining pool of golfers willing to pay the price (in time and / or money) for full (or even 5 day) membership.

I also disagree- the other clubs in north county dublin will be the main benificiaries. It's quite clear that more than just Turvey needs to close before the market in north co dublin stabilises. But either way it looks as if they have saved themselves so best of luck to them.

But if a club goes under that has say 400 members how many will not join another club.
And the only reason the kept paying their subs year in year out was habit routine etc.
so if 100 out of that number quit membership golf, then that's a loss to golf in general( new clubs balls etc) all has a knock on effect in my opinion

Plus if the members are spread around various golf courses and numbers in those club come to max allowed, would that mean hello money start again for people looking to take up the sport

Good news on the Hollywood lakes front, club are now set up with the new owner and the golf year will kick off in April running to March 2015. Members have paid €300 so far to cover Jan - March of this year. New subs are €995 for the year, great price for a great course.
