small van question

Hi. I thinking off buying a small second hand box van (berlingo, partner, etc). Quite a lot of the ads I see give a price "plus vat". What does that mean to me as the buyer.I am a private buyer?

I will tax it commercially is possible,if not I guess I will tax it private.

Any experience or advice on this greatly appreciated

    Cheers.

The price they are quoting is the buying price excluding VAT. You need to multiply the price by 1.23 to get the true price.

    Price €1,000 plus VAT

    True price: €1,230

Cheers for the quick reply. So when I go to the dealer and agree to buy I must give him the full price or the ex vat price, or how does it work?

The reason for quoting 'plus VAT' is that a VAT registered trader can reclaim the VAT if the vehicle is used for the business. VAT on cars is not allowable.

Also, VAT on diesel is allowed (unless that has changed recently). The seller has to be paid the VAT in full.

it means that you will have to pay vat on top of price most likely it a garage if asking for vat ask them whats the best thay will do for cash
If your vat registered you can claim some of it back.

You must pay the full price but, if you are VAT registered, you can claim some of it back.

"Some" being the 23% VAT. You sound like you're wanting to hunt with the Hound and run with the Fox OP - not pay the VAT as a "private" citizen but tax it "commercial" as a business. Which is fine, but...:)

IMO If you are buying it new then you will have to go to the main dealer vat and all the other charges etc will apply. If you are looking to buy secondhand you should buy privately and you can still tax it at the commercial rate.

    Errm not really.

You need a goods only declaration RF111A signed by a guard.

You also now need a letter from Revenue stating your self employed and need the van for work purpose only.

    OR

A Letter from your employer stating you'll be using the work for work purpose only.

Can't even use a herd number anymore!

As far as I understand, You only need the RF111a and letter from employer/revenue when your taxing a vehicle you just bought.

it's not getting a Gard to sign the form that's the problem, they are only witnessing your signature. The problem is you are declaring you will only use it commercially..if you were to get caught otherwise, False Declaration is quite serious

Thanks all for the replies. By the sounds of things it's pretty tight now and the use of small vans as private vehicles while being taxed as commercial is pretty much out the window. Sounds like its not so much the guards hassling people anymore, but revenue cracking down on it that's the problem.Anyone that has one seem to be fine, but when someone gets one for the first time or trades up to a newer one are snookered.

Anyone know what the story is with buying one and changing it to private. Is there a charge to do change to private, how is road tax calculated, do you still doe test it every year, any problems with insuring it or premium hikes?

Trying to figure out what to do in advance, as once I get it I could end up in not so good a situation.

Sorry for bumping this up.Anyone know what needs to be done to change a van to private?

I take it I need to pay any outstanding vat and request change to private ownership?

Any other costs that I may be missing?

How does road tax get calculated, on engine size or emissions?

Any issues with insurance. Currently with Allianz for car?

I take it the van gets DOE'd every year as normal?

Would it not be better to sell it and buy a passenger car?

That's another option. But as we have another car a van would be really handy for us.
