    Hi,

I'm interested in becoming a classic car driver/owner and have been doing a bit of window shopping on DoneDeal and on Adverts.

I was looking to spent up to €3000. If you had €3000 to purchase a 4 door saloon from say the early 80's, what would you go for & why?

    Thanks is advance :)

    Or a bulletproof w123 Mercedes.

    'bulletproof' - meaning strong/indestructable, rather than an Armoured W123 :eek::eek: :P

How about a Jag / Daimler tho I'd prefer Merc / BMW myself

Ok thanks guys. Is German the way to go? I was looking at going for a Ford Cortina, Ford Escort or Vauxhall Chevette, I'm still looking though. I've looked at a few BMW E28 5 series & w123 Mercedes are there are some lovely ones out there.

Just a pity it has to be NCT tested. Would love an old Ascona,:).

I know where there are 2 asconas for sale 1979 and 1981(I think).
Cars not bad & Both could be restored or combine 2 to make 1.
    1k would buy both.

Chevette d/s wing looks resprayed, and wheels are defo resprayed. UUI I'd guess is a re-reg from the UK so beware ? Would you have to reg/vrt it here ?

    Plenty of Cavalier / Marina-Itals

Even with the VRT and NCT it should come in around the €3000 mark,

If you buy post 1979, I would suggest don't buy anything that doesn't have a current NCT.

If it doesn't have one, there's probably a reason and may also explain why it's for sale.

As an owner of an E28 I would highly recommend one though be mindful that cars of that era are not the best on fuel. There are plenty of specialist website relating to the cars you mentioned and parts are not hard to come by. The E28 is a car to cruise in, I have a 520i but I'd recommend the 525e (my Uncle has one) and its a lot better on fuel.

Best of luck on the hunt!

I averaged 35mpg with my old 518i E28. Performance wise it wasn't far down on the 520i, though obviously it did not sound as nice as the 6 cyl.

I'd suggest to drive as many cars as you feel inclined to and pick the car you like the most. What other people would go for and why shouldn't matter to you a whole lot.

Many people say to go for Merc or BMW (as would I normally) but ultimately it comes down to what you like.

I have a W123 Mercedes, and its great. Fuel injected petrol, and this alone cuts out all the faffing about that you see owners of carburettor cars up to, balancing carbs and whatnot. If its going OK when you get it, it will more than likely keep on doing so.

If I was to win big on the lotto, would love a BMW 2002 Tii, If I won small on the Lotto, a Volvo 240 saloon or estate would be a very practical old tank.

That Mk V looks nice, should have a V6 in it

The 525e was a very underrated motor - performance+economy

This looks like it might be worth having a look at -

And I now have your 518 (87 reg ending in 525) and it's still running well,

nearly all these model cortinas suffered from major camshaft problems ,so be very careful.....by the way ,in the picture the water/coolant level bottle looks to be very low....i wonder why ;)

Many mid-70s Cortinas suffered from (overhead) camshaft problems – oil starvation if I remember properly – which caused a terrible death rattle noise that I remember to this day. The Cavalier has its own camshaft problems too. And the tappet rattle from the Talbot / Simca engines is legendary, even when they are properly adjusted.
So here we have the death rattle trio". just thought you should read this before u hand over the big "wedge of wonga"

Aye, I heard. Best of luck with it.
It was my daily driver for a number of years. I really liked that car but I can't keep them all. That said, I wouldn't mind first refusal if or when you want to move it on...
