It's usually a fault with the logic board and is known to Samsung.

It's covered by warranty so you can send it to be fixed.

Fonefix or SBE are best, avoid Fonemenders as they took nearly two months to fix mine.

I have this and my company are changing my phone, I wouldn't get another s3 with that bug. Basically if you want it "repaired" you send it back to samsung and they send out a new phone with the same bug, that should last another 8-9 months until the phone does it again. There is an app to check, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.vinagre.android.emmc_check&hl=en
If it says your phone has an insane chip then you have the bug. Another guy in work has it too but in a more advanced stage than mine, his is dead completely. His was like mine last week.

Apparently they don't care. I had the same problem and just traded it in. I could have got it fixed under warranty but I couldn't have managed without a phone at the time.

I just checked their website - they're only giving €190 for the S3 now.

Yep, I sold mine last week for €300. In fairness, it had shown no signs of freezing or anything, but I got a nexus 4 for the same money so it was a no brainer really.

Checked last night about the insane chip, as im running the official update it wont get the sudden death syndrome, still puzzled by the freezing though, Im going to reset to factory settings and hope it fixes it.

The update doesn't really work properly AFAIK, we all have the official update.
    It's a problem they can't/won't fix.

Will probably fix it for awhile. I'm having the same problem with freezing. Did a factory reset and it stopped for about a week. It's back doing it again but not as bad as before but I guess it's only time.

Wonder would a new rom work?

It won't, it's a fault with the motherboard itself, specifically the logic board.

I had the same problem and SBE fixed it for me in a week, compared to Fonemenders taking over a month because they have to send it to SBE.

No. Tried 4 different ROMs. New motherboard is the only thing that works.

On XDA, there are posters who say any 4.2.2 rom with the apprpriate recovery (not all CWMs) will do the job.

The fix pushed to us in Ireland is v1 of the 'fix' which still randomly gives the freezing problem but makes the affected part of the chip non-writable/readable , official 4.2.2 which is overdue is supposed to fix it permanently.

(All taken from XDA especially this thread, it's still all up in the air I think)

What ROMs/custom recoveries did you try out of interest, killbillvol2?

A couple of the stock ROMs, Omega, Revolution and two of the really stripped down ROMs, can't remember exactly which.

I had the freezing problem on my s3. A factory reset fixed it - havent had the issue now in the month or so since the reset. Only annoying thing now is the random reboot that happens maybe once a week on average.

Its being put to factory settings tonight it has frozen about 6 times already since 7.

If I can comment, I have been experiencing rebooting which appeared random, but I have noted that it happens during a copy/paste operation.

For example, copying a block of text in a browser and pasting it into, for example Forum Runner or Tapa talk.. as a quote.

The phone just falls over, like goes through reboot, but no request for PIN [SIM??]

Running 4.1.0 Samsung Rom xxella with custom recovery and rooted.

checked for dodgy eMMC chip and have it.

what should I do to prevent full SDS or am I safe to perhaps install updated Rom??

To be honest I don't think a factory reset will do anything more than reduce the number of freezes temporarily.

In the early stages I thought I could connect the reboots to certain issues. Then it became completely random. It often shut down and didn't reboot.

Initially changing the ROM eased the problem for a while but that time became shorter and shorter.

There are two solutions: get the motherboard replaced or get rid of the phone. Anything else is temporary at best.

    It really is shocking......

this phone was a present to me from my son, and it is performing so badly, I am embarrassed due to the circumstances.....

it was so expensive, I am afraid to do too much by way of flashing ROM's etc.....

I had no problem doing this on inexpensive Androids, like the ZTE Blade, and the Huawei G300......and everything worked out OK.

But, when I rooted this phone, and put on the custom recovery, I got this small red hyphen on reboot, and the custom binary counter is at 2 in download mode, everything shows "custom".....no OTA updates!!!

    ============

Anyhow, I have searched for the specific cut/paste problem, and it seems that this is a separate bug, present from the very start, acknowledged by Samsung, but never fixed.

It does not seem to be related to the SDS thing.

It is a known bug, when you use the clipboard for more than 20 cut/paste operations, the phone simply re-boots, dur to the bad coding whereby Samsung did not allow for flushing the clipboard after 20 operations, and just reboots with no warning.....see vid below for example:

if you use the Samsung keyboard, there is a way to flush/empty the clipboard, but not if you use another keyboard, which I do.

There are workarounds, like deleting the folders in /data/clipboard...but you need to be rooted, and it is a little bit inconvenient.

    see here for more info:

EDIT:Perhaps this should be in a new thread, mods can advise or move if necessary...thanks.
