Look what turned up in my friendly local bikeshop today...

    943600_10151510004384541_453682920_n.jpg

She's not pink, but she's sure mine!

And right after I'd ordered her replacement

Did you call the cops and get the name of who dropped it in?

    Decent paint job or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

    Did you take her back?

    Can The paintjob be removed?

How did the shop owner know to call you about it?

Is it being returned to you?

Can you provide a picture of it in its former glory for comparison?

Where does it stand on Pat McQuaid...

Can Tiny confirm that he has actually ridden this bike in the past two years. Maybe the bike left due to neglect :-)

If train A leaves the station going 60 miles per hour and train B leaves one hour later going 85 miles per hour, how long will it take train B to catch up with train A?

    What's this all about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭dubmess

Came into our shop, which I won't mention as mods don't like that.

I know Tiny... the guy who dropped it in seemed a bit suspect and his story was odd. Won't say more as cops are involved.

When I went to work on the bike I noticed that it had been resprayed, bottle cage screws had been painted. For some reason I thought of Tiny as there was just something madly familiar about the bike. Brought up this:
    http://www.broadsheet.ie/2013/05/13/they-took-them-both/

Compared parts and that was that...

And yes that is a coffee grinder and machine you're spying. Got to feed the habit.

Paint Job is apparently sloppy, but not bad (even if it's a horrible colour).

It was ridden in the previous 2 years, though not many times, so she may have left out of neglect.

The mighty Dubmess sorted it out for me -Guards have been informed, I'll get it later :)

Last year a stolen Wilier Cento Uno turned up resprayed. It would be interesting to know if there is anything in common with the guy who dropped the PX into the shop and the people who had the Cento Uno.

This is a great news story.

Did you arrange the gardai to be there for when the thief came to collect the bike?

    Nice 1

Will it be possible to get it resprayed back to the original colour?

Hmmm. Maybe you should have waited until the guy was arrested before posting this up...
Nah. You can't be a boardsie AND a bike-thieving scumbag.

I'm glad you got your bike back OP .:).

    No way it looks better!

To be honest, I won't get it resprayed -Have already ordered all the bits to replace it, so it'll most likely be kept as a spare, or broken up and stuck on the adverts section -anyone want a cheap white (used to be pink) large P-X pro carbon!? :)

Can't see him being arrested, and I know his occupation so it's highly unlikely he's checking boards in work (and he is at work at the moment) :)

IMO KEEP IT! Getting a stolen bike back is rare, very rare.

So getting both the ones that were stolen back makes me very lucky.... maybe I need to play the lotto tomorrow...

Yes it certainly does...what lotto numbers are u going to use? :)

Did you get the mercian back? It was / is a very nice frame.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭victorcarrera

I hope the police make the catch without showing cooperation of the bike shop staff, although I think this is so brazen that it may have been bought by an unsuspecting individual.

He *could* be, but I don't see it happening... it's Ireland after all, people tend not to get arrested over this sort of thing, and he didn't steal it, just brought stolen property, so a slap on the wrist at best as it's hard to prove he knew (though he did)

@funkyjebus I got the Mercian back the day after :)

Don't think Dubmess minds too much, what can the guy do, say "oh dear, the stolen bike I brought has got back to it's owner, I'm never dropping stolen property into this shop again"!

How did you get the Mercian back?

It is slightly awkward and I'm really not looking forward to the conversation, but what can you do?

Not really your problem, the guy bought stolen goods and now it has come back to bite him on the ass. Just wondering do you know the guy personally?

I'd lead off with "in these circumstances, the policy of the shop is...". No need to make it personal. Your hands are tied etc. I'd say he had to know the bike was nicked. The re spray alone.

It was in for repair. TBH it just looked like whoever took at apart for the pretty decent respray didn't know how to put it back together. I don't want to make out that the guy knew it was stolen though.

Outside of reporting it you shouldn't get involved. It is a civil law case now for the police to prosecute for possession of stolen property. The bike will most likely be taken and held by the police until after the court case. For now the possessor will be cautioned that they may be prosecuted until the DPP decides.
I think that your best option is to say the police call regularly looking for stolen bikes and lifted this one.
This is not an insignificant case as the total loss to the owner was in excess of €1000.

Start off with "I'm sorry to have to tell you, the bike you brought in had been reported stolen the week before, in those circumstances the policy of the shop is to report the matter to the gardai..."

You're being very clear and aren't insinuating anything untoward on his behalf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

I doubt the bike will be taken by the police, certainly not for any length of time. In my experience it's given straight back to the original owner once they can prove ownership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

If you had asked me whether there was respraying of stolen bikes going on in Ireland I would have said "no way, who could be bothered for the sake of €100?". Clearly somebody is bothering to do it. Maybe they're getting a few hundred euro out of them and using a mate's spraying facilities for free.

Glad to hear you got it back, even with the gank colour. Probably better off that you have the new bike inbound, this one may never feel the same again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,410 ✭✭✭✭endacl

I'm still not convinced about the 'gankness' of the colour. It did start off pink, didn't it...?

    :)

To my knowledge this is irrelevant in law.

The police will try to establish whether to prosecute for larceny or possession of stolen goods and a visit to their lodgings may show up more.

Great you got it back TinyExplosions, shame about the respray. I've admired that bike from afar a few times.

Be honest, it was Fintan O'Toole wasn't it?
