Holiday in Ericeira

    Hi,

I'm looking to book a trip to Ericeira, North of Lisbon pretty soon. I've been mad to get away on a surf trip and by most accounts and my budget it seems like the place to go for me.

I have a few of questions though for anyone who has been before. The average temperature seems to be a bit lower than the Algarve, is it still beach sunbathing weather? This is important for my OH. Does the town have some sort of life to it? And finally, July seems to have the lowest waves, are they terrible or still good enough for an almost beginner surfer?

    Cheers
    Paul

I was there around 5 or 6 years ago, pretty sure it was in early June.
The water temp was cool for swimming without a wetsuit but easily bearable, and it was windy on the beaches some days – but warm and sunny. I took lessons there with a surf school maybe 2kms south of Ericeira and found the waves ok on most days – a little big for a beginner on some days – but safe on the right tides – basically if the schools are operating i’d say its ok for an almost beginner. Can’t remember much in the way of nightlife – but there was great seafood places and a casino about half hr drive away. In general the town had a nice vibe, if a little quiet. Could be busier in July as the temps would be higher in the city.

I was there late May about two-three years ago. Not much in the town itself though the grub is quiet nice, once you like fish. You're not far from lisbon if you're after a bit of nightlife.

Found it very windy most days we were there and we wore wetsuits though you probably could of got away without them. Dunno what the waves would be like in july but the guys we were talking to over there did say that the summer was the flattest time of the year.

July will be mid to high 20s in June, definitely good for sunbathing!! Its a cheap place and easy to get to. some great little bars and restaurants and its nice wandering around the old town and the cliffs. Much nicer than the south IMO as its not as touristy or developed. You'll get plenty of waves to yourself, especially if you get up early. July should be good for waves, wont have the big winter swell waves but its a very reliable spot and lots of choice. I've stayed in a few places around there so if you've any questions let me know

I stayed there at the start of August a few years ago and surfed Foz beach most days in a 3/2. The waves there are definitely big enough for beginners(up to 3/4ft) and there are a few different options nearby for more accomplished surfers.
It was hot enough for sunbathing as well but not super hot. In the evenings it got a bit chilly if the wind was up but not cold by any means. Still t-shirt and shorts weather. Lovely restaurants there too and reasonably priced. Not all fish though, you can get other types of meat if you want!
I'd recommend it for a quiet holiday where you want to relax but not if you want a nightclub/hangover type of holiday.

Check out Peniche while you are there. Lots of options depending on the wind. And Supertubos, If you're feeling brave.

    Hi Folks,

I'm also looking at heading to Ericeira this july with my g/f, can anyone recommend somewhere to stay there ? also is it worth renting a car ?

    thanks

    We used this site. https://www.airbnb.com

There seems to be lots of good hostels but I think we missed any remaining double rooms with ensuite at the time we want to go.

i've used https://www.surfholidays.com before in Ericeira, stayed in the Helios bungalows with my girlf on foz surf beach, great setup. Car not necessary here, everything on the beach, food, & surf rental, but we got taxis for a few euro into town and back easy. If you want to surf many different breaks a car is necessary but if you are intermediate then you are fine at Foz without a car

Can yo remember how much the surf rental was by any chance?

It depended on whether you take a hard board or fiberglass. Was about €10 for half a day
