Which FETAC Computer course to do

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice. I want to ultimately get a degree, as I've never previously gotten one. I feel computers is the way for me to go as I'm very interested in it and i seem to be good at it.

I've been looking at the Computing course in CIT, I would have to do a Part Time course because I'm working Full time and can't afford not to. I'll be 23 in November, so I'll be looking to do it as a mature student. I know that without a previous higher cert I can't go straight into the Part time 2 year Computing BSc course.

The obvious option would be to first do the Computing Higher Certificate in CIT, but unfortunately I can't afford that right now. I'm wondering, if I did a FETAC level 5/6 course in computers first (which would be signifigantly less cost), would that help me to then get directly into the Computing BSc part time course?

Which FETAC would you recommend in St. Johns between - Computer Programming, Database and AutoCAD?

Any advice welcome and appreciated, I've emailed the IT department at the college but waiting for a reply :)

    Thank you!

It's definitely a help to gain access. I did a computer course and got offers for computer courses in an institute of technology, and so did most of my class.

Most FETAC 5/6 computer courses will help you get into a level 7/8 Bsc no problem. As long as the course you do has the required modules that CIT/UCC specify. You can search each colleges requirement here: http://www2.cao.ie/fetac/fetac_search.php

The module codes you see are the subjects that you have to get top marks in on the FETAC course, if you just goolge the code followed by FETAC it should be easy to find out what that subject is.

Great, thank you for that. Ideally I'd like to go straight into the BSc to save time and money so if there's a way to do that it'd be great. I'm setting up a meeting at the moment with the head of the CIT IT department anyway as he emailed me back so hopefully I can get some concrete answers from him on my best course of action!

    Thanks for the help.

Thanks John, did you have an IT background beforehand? Did you find it helpful for jobs?

    Hi
I worked in the education field and I found it very beneficial. It is a challenging course that can take a number of years to degree level as a diploma is completed first. Maybe a fetac module first would give some background first at level 5 or 6.
