Just wondering does anyone know if there is a red light camera (as in to catch people who go through amber/red lights) on the Navan road at the cross roads at Cabra Garda Station? Specifically heading into town on the Navan Road. Thanks

didn't think such a thing existed in Ireland ? ....even if it does ... its probably not possible to prosecute or issue a fine from it and its probably just a survey camera to check how many people break the lights.

Nope was round the corner when I could swear I seen a flash, which I assume was for the car behind me since the light was green when I went through.

Do be around there a bit. Don't know of any red light cameras there but there is usually a garda speed camera van hanging around there

Its hard to find any definite information on these but there was certainly a trial of them at a few locations in Dublin in 2011. The only junction I know where there was one is crossing the Luas line at Blackhall Place. At the time this trial was announced Dublin City Council said it was for information gathering only, but the Gardai said that the images could be used to issue fines and points.

    They do exist in Ireland.

Here is the one near Heuston: http://goo.gl/maps/jU42A There are a few more, mainly near the Luas lines.

Also, I think your mixing up Red Light Cameras and Speed Cameras. They can of course enforce & prosecute any photo from them.

As regards the OP question, I doubt there is one on the Navan road especially in that spot.

Yeah there is always speed camers around there.

When I was driving that way this morning again and had a look and there seems to be something on the pole near where the little shop kinda is, but it could always have been there and I just never noticed before. Could easily just be something to do with the electricity pole, I couldn't really get a good look at it.

so...why not roll these out for every junction and collect the revenue ?? that is what they are for ...isn't it ? or are they to deter someone who doesn't know they are there and suddenly gets a fine !!

There is a small bit of traffic monitoring going on at present, there is a video unit in Sandyford at the moment. Not enforcement, purely survey. Might be connected to that project?

While I tend to agree, red lights are too subjective. We've all been caught out especially in or after rain where braking would be disastrous. I can think of at least three major junctions where you could easily be approaching at 80km/h, and these cameras won't factor that in. Same applies if some numphty broke down in front of you or didn't clear the junction in time.

but if the camera records from when the amber light turns on then the distance before the actual "line" and possible braking distance/speed could all be simple to determine.... maybe a front and back facing camera to catch bikers would be required.

might need to create some white lines (markers) on the roads but it would be simple enough to do and cheap enough given the possible/potential revenue..... make it an automatic system where the licence plate number is automatically fed into the fine system and a fine is generated and posted (less chance of human error - or have a person/team dedicated to cross referencing the licence plate number with the PULSE system to cross check all details are correct)

in dublin alone on the quays you have approx 1/2 cars every few mins which "break" the lights ...could lead to safer driving all around.

Seen some sort of camera mounted when leaving Navan towards Kells at last junction, but dont think there are any cameras around that monitor who passes what light,as someone mentioned before me people often jump amber light, and if its early in process theres no danger in that, even when red light turns on theres still couple seconds delay before it goes green for other traffic.
