Immigration - first point of landing only?

My flight will involve 2 or three legs to get to my final destination (Saskatoon).

If my first stop in Canada is not my final destination (eg Toronto) then can I choose to not clear immigration there & wait until I reach the final destination? This would save the mid-journey-panic of trying to make the next flight when you've no idea how long the immigration process will take.

You have to clear Immigration/Customs at your first point of entry to Canada. After that you are domestic

My concern is allowing enough time to clear immigration, and I would rather do it at the end of my last flight so there's no possibility of missing a flight, or indeed being stuck waiting for hours & hours unnecessarily before the next flight, if I allowed too much time for immigration. Both would be a nightmare with a small child.
