hi guys. probably a silly issue in comparrision to others.

moved into a house few weeks ago, other residents had been living here for two years and still are. doorbell rang today and tv licence inspector asked for licence. i asked the girls and they informed me they had none EVER. Mortified i faced the inspector, was given the ticket, they took my name however and said i would be summoned if not paid in two weeks.

now the situation is, i dont watch tv. just in advance though i am perfectly happy to pay a share of it, to avoid conflict but the other girls arent having any of it. the tv belongs to one of the girls and she watches it solely, but they arent bothered. now im freaking as i have no money, im a student and already a little behind on repayment, im also terrified of being summoned as its my name the official took. have i any rights here. i have lived here 7 weeks and will be leaving in two weeks. they have been here two years. can i ring up and ask to have my name removed. im really worried. im currently being garda vetted for a new job im starting too, so im very upset about this. ill add again, its not the money, i will happily pay a share to get it done with it, but i cant afford the whole thing right now. any help would be great

It's not a problem at all if your leaving the house. Simply ring up the number on the form and tell them you are moving out. They will ask for the address and then delete the account. I did something similar today. No big deal so don't fret. Licience is responsibly of the occupier, that won't be you in two week. By the way your housemates sound very inconsiderate.

Sorry meant to say they will delete your name from account as opposed to property account.

    Hey,

I had a situation where we didnt have a tv license in a previous house and while I wasn't at home my housemate gave my name and details to the tv license inspector. I got a letter a couple of weeks later saying to pay quickly or there would be legal action. I rang them up as we were moving out shortly after and explained the situation and they basically let me off.

If you really can't get them both to pay I'd ring up and explain the situation, that the tv is not yours and you don't use it. Give them the girls name and let her face the consequences.

Edit: just read you're about to move out. Explain that and you'll be grand.

thanks for the replies guys. ya I dont mind paying a bit to avoid awkwardness but a summons......no thanks. am I in my right to ask them to remove my name though. its not my tv. and i dont own the house, i pay rent thats about it. i just dont want the office to refuse to remove my name when i ring tomorrow

Honestly it's grand, just say you're moving out so you won't be paying! There won't be any problems with it. I don't know they may ask for your housemates name though.

im not going for another month though. accidently wrote 2 weeks in the op. end of july im leaving. ive no issue giving the name as long as its legal to do so. may sound nasty but I certainy dont intend to be called to court

Well have you gotten the letter they send out yet? That took a week or two to arrive for me. Then I rang them about a month before we moved. But we were all moving at the time and the house was being sold. If your housemates are staying on they may want their details (I don't know). Worth ringing anyway. They won't hold you accountable.

OP, you shouldn't be contributing to the license at all. You don't watch TV and also you've only been there 2 months and are moving out soon. Ring up the TV license people and say you're moving out so won't be paying it.
