Unpaid work experience

Firstly some background to my question. I'm currently on a college work placement and my contract expires in about 6 weeks time. I know that for someone in my position anything to add to a CV is hugely valuable so for that reason I would like to stay there for an extra few weeks over the summer until I start back at college.
I have a good feeling that the company will not be agreeable to extend the contract in terms of paying a salary but is it possible that they would allow me to stay on while being unpaid? Would they have a reason to say no to that?
I'm working on a particular project at the moment and have now realised that it won't be finished by the time I am due to leave so I would like the chance to see it through more for my own education than any other reason.

ryanf1, why would they not keep you there? Kindly ask for a contract extension and they'll be happy to hear that ;)

Some discussions have taken place on this but the HR person who I believe these decisions rest with is away on holidays so there s a delay.
I now know that if I do get to stay I will be paid for it so its just a question to them agreeing to it or not
