    Hi there,

This has probably been asked before on here but I've been looking and just thought I may as well post myself and someone might direct me exactly where to look!

Basically the story is, Im moving to Dublin - Blackrock to be exact - on Sunday and I'm wondering about picking up english freeview and saorview when I'm there. The house I'm moving to has Sky package - not sure which one but I've been told there's no multiroom in the house. There was however a cable running to the room I'll have so I'd imagine that's coming from the dish. So what would I be better doing does anyone wanna tell me?

    1. Asking to get multiroom add-on and use an old skybox that I have already? is multiroom €15 a month?

    2. Could I use the old skybox for freeview uk through the cable thats there? what do i need? and how would I then get saorview as I don't think there is an aerial at the house?

I'm probably going to buy this tv ( http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televisions/large-screen-tvs-32-and-over/samsung-ps43f4500-43-plasma-tv-21249727-pdt.html ) as it seems good value but at the same time I'm open to suggestions because this one may be a bit big for the room i honestly don't know.

I was looking at a 32" samsung smart TV for £330 but shock horror it's on offer and there are none available like anywhere..! Anyone with suggestions I'd be very grateful!

    Cheers!

An out-of-subscription Sky box will get you the free-to-air UK channels, provided the cable in the room is actually from the dish, of course.

You'll need an aerial of some kind for Saorview: an indoor 'set-top' type might provide satisfactory reception if there's nothing else available.

hi there you will get freeview you will need to get aerial installed if not installed you two have choices from where you get the signal from the north or wales that will be up the aerial installer. As for plamsa tv,s not big fan because burn screen problems, they are better for sports, thats your choice

I have one of them set-top ones here somewhere so I'll take that with me too. I'd say its near guaranteed that the cable is coming from the dish as from the quick look I gave it, it did look like a sky cable I've seen before. Don't want the hassle of getting a new aerial onto house and running cables etc.

Have you seen any plasma with burned screen yet? Only problem with cheap plasmas (mainly from LG and Samsung) is ghosting I would not bother with burning as new plasma screens can last longer than 20 years working 24/7, other problem with plasma is glossy screen.

Regarding Saorview you can easily get it from Three Rock (CH30), Freeview depends on location, but I would not bother with it unless there is already aerial installed

I'm sure then that the samsung would do me as long as i wanted it for then! I'm gonna take the "one-for-all" indoor aerial and try it for saorview if there's no aerial at house.

Just another quick question on the combi tv's....anyone have one?? what's the opinion on them? handier than having a skybox for freeview? do you get all the uk channels you should get??

There is no guarantee of 'easily' getting anything, even if relatively close to a transmitter like Three Rock. OP's house could have building materials unfriendly to radio waves, or outside some trees or buildings in the wrong place: could rule out indoor aerials anyway.

Also, OP's reference to 'freeview', is nothing to do with UK terrestrial tv, but the free-to-air satellite channels. I could have given them a lecture on it, but was pretty sure anyone who actually read the OP would at least spot the reference to an old Sky box (& this is the satellite forum).

Only extra channels you will get with a Sky box are with a 'free-to-view' (FTV) card, variously referred to in this forum as a 'FTV', 'Setanta' or 'BAI' card. You can try a search of those terms, I think there is a recent thread.

Thanks peter I will have a search for that. The card that I have here with the old sky box is a white card with no indication as to what it actually is apart from sky written on it!
i just imagine the combi tv would be handier as it would only have the free channels and wouldn't have to set everything to favourites through skybox.

    hi again all....

SO i moved down last week and got myself settled but had to get a new remote for my sky box (which i still have to connect to the box when i figure out how to do it) so I left the TV until tonite. i plugged the skybox up to the black cable running into my room and switched it on and it said error 29 no satellite signal being received....Would this basically mean that the black cable isnt connected to the dish?? I'm skint so don;t want to pay an unnecessary callout charge just for something that may be simple!

Have a white card here with the box but am applying for a setanta FTV card tomoro!

I'm assuming that the cable had an f-connector on it, so you could only connect it to the Sky box lnb-in.

That being the case, & assuming the cable is part of the satellite setup, you could have a dodgy connection somewhere or damage to the cable. Less likely would be a non-functioning lnb output.

All this assumes that any other Sky boxes connected to the dish are working i.e. the dish is correctly aligned.

Yeah peter it had the f connector and i plugged it directly into the lnb in. And yep the sky in the main living room is working perfectly. would it be anything to do with the card even? like would it make any difference to wait for the setanta card? i'm a bit clueless when it comes to sky that's all!

Ok so a wee update here...mainly for you peter seeing as your the man in the know and hopefully you can help!

Took my standard skybox downstairs to living room with the white card I have and hooked up one of the two feeds going into the sky+HD box in the living room to my standard box. Hey presto it worked perfectly and even has the UK EPG on it and all!

But this is also bad news I'm thinking....It works downstairs but not upstairs....I have also found out that the cable that goes into my room is also going to all the other bedrooms as well (but i havent tried the other rooms cables though to see if they work yet actually)....can't see that they could be UPC or anything like that so what could be problems? cable looks in good nick to me anyway it just runs straight up the door frame into the attic...

Take a look at the lnb on the dish & see how many cables are connected to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭mcg1987

will do that first thing in the morning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭mcg1987

sorry about the bad pictures...crap blackberry...but there seems to be 2 black cables coming off it for the sky+HD box in living room I imagine... don't know what this means for me or wat these other wires are to each room now either!

Is there a white cable there too?

Anyhow, you know that you need a cable from the lnb to your receiver. I suppose the nitty-gritty of achieving this is up to yourself or whoever owns the house.

Cheers again for the reply peter...Sorry yes there is a white cable there also at the front then 2 black ones. I know I need a cable going to the box...most liely that the lead already in my room is useless then so...wonder what it could be for though??

would be handy enough to run cable over anyway as the dish is out the front and so is my room so i could just run it over and in the window which would be grand i'd say.

any idea wat all this might cost or recommendations on anyone in south dublin who does this? It's blackrock I'm in! :D

Can't recommend anyone in that area but, as you say, it should be a handy job for someone. :)

if there was a ladder here i think i'd just attempt it myself!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭mcg1987

2 quotes of €65 and €68 to supply and fit quad lnb and 10m cabling including call-out fee...hows that sound?? seems good enough to me....although when I told one of them there was a twin lnb on it now (I guessed that) to feed the sky+HD he said sky don't usually do twin lnbs and only do single or quad ones....so may not even need the quad one..If only I had a ladder I could prob save myself €60!

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,285 ✭✭✭Peter Rhea

Dish already has a quad, already with 3 cables connected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭mcg1987

so all i need is the cable then?? be cheaper again then so! what exactly is the white one doing then peter? you think that is running into the house too or what??
