After my nose was broken for the nth time during a rugby match I found I can no longer whistle. I was never great at it but I could whistle a wee tune or call the dogs back. Now - not a chance. It's a bit annoying. :(

I find it's often used as a signal by males to mark their territory much like a terrier pi$$ing on a tree.

Postmen are noted for having the most tuneless whistling.

When women whistle, it just sounds wrong....for some reason.

In 1953 100% of men could whistle.

Wrong it was 99.9999999% of men.

Famously, John "The Whistler" Kelly couldn't whistle!

My 3yr old just learnt how to whistle, which she's very proud of, which means she now whistles ALL THE BLOODY TIME :(, got woken up this morning by whistling....

The worst thing is she can only do the one note (more or less) so I've been trying to teach her to whistle songs to at least break up the monotony a bit.

Don't necessarily have a problem with people whistling though, as long as they don't do it all the time or the same thing over and over again.

I myself have been known to knock out the odd tune. I used to try to whistle this
    from about a minute in.

I was never into the whistling myself, I always preferred humming. You never hear a woman humming. I knew a woman once, but she died soon after.

It always seems to be men who stroll around whisling on their own.

When I do it it's great and a signal that all is right with the world.
When other people do it it's insanely annoying.

I don't mind whistling, I do it myself.

My (adult) American cousin told me that she'd never heard a woman whistling before. WTF?

Most people who whistle along to music also tend to have awful taste in music.
There seems to be some strange correlation between the two.

Yeah... it's really annoying listening to the youngers whistling along to Skrillex.

I can whistle very tunefully, even if I do say so myself:P. My favourite tune to whistle is the beginning of Patience, Guns n Roses. My Dad was constantly whistling, and taught me when I was tiny. . .

Was in Amsterdam about a year ago and heard whistling. I looked around because it was very loud and melodious, but saw no-one whistling. A couple of minutes later he walked past; you could hear him well after he'd gone too, the whistle must have carried for a few hundred metres. I have no idea how he managed to whistle so loudly so well.

Someone whistling along to a song or just in general

    Me-"The original was better"
    Them-"That is the original"

I'll just keep walking before the penny drops:pac:

It's a dying artform passed on from father to son. If your Da is really oldschool you'll be taught; Sing a few lines from the song > Insert whistling for the bits you don't know > Hum a bit > Sing same lines of the song again.

Yeah my grandad passed it onto me. Don't really see anything wrong with it. You never see sad people whistling. My theory is that you have to half smile to whistle and smiling makes you happy so therefore whistling makes you happy.
