When I started school at 13 I joined a rowing club. I don't know if there is any rowers here but its an extremely intense sport. I kept it up for the whole 5 years of school and by the end of it we were training 6 days a week. On the water, weights, core training, running and indoor rowing machines. So by the time I finished I was extremely fit and quite well built.

Now its been 4 years of college since I finished school and stopped rowing. For the first year of college I joined the gym and kept a fairly intense exercise routine but since then it has dwindled considerably, and now I swim or run twice a week. No weights or anything like that. Despite the lack of exercise my body has remained the same and I have retained most of the muscle I had but none of the fitness, I look the same and am the same weight I was when I stopped rowing.

Is this normal? I expected all the muscle I had built up over the years to disappear but it hasn't.
