Protein shake before, during or after crossfit?

Hi guys. I've recently joined crossfit and there is a lot of weights work in it - I'm only really used to cardio.

After the first few sessions I had serious pains in my muscles for days after as I didn't exactly stretch much after, didn't eat a big steak after or take a protein shake.

I purchased a whey protein powder and some glutamine powder last week. Had my session this morning and took a shake after and felt relatively fine today rather than being in pain like last time (although it might just be my body finally adjusting to it). My question is - should I be taking the protein shake before, during or after the workout?

Some have advised I should take one before, others say I should take one before and one after. Others even say take one before, during and after! I'm not entirely sure which is best?

    Cheers!

By all means have one after, but your recovery between sessions will be about the totality of your diet and rest:

    - eat the right ratio of proteins; carbs and healthy fats across all of your meals
    - drink lots of water
    - sleep loads

and you should be fine. I train at Crossfit too and found that the bad DOMs go away after the first few sessions. Stick at it and you'll get into a good rhythm. Some of the lads down here stretch / foam roll / mobilise for up to an hour before and after sessions and then some do little or nothing before and after. I've been led to believe that active recovery stuff and post workout meals / shakes - while nice and helpful - pale in comparison to the big three factors above.

    Best of luck with it.
