I have a john deere 7800 tractor that i was using today, when i went to turn it off it wouldnt. The thing is the previous owner had back up guages fitted engine temp oil temp, emergency shut down etc. There is also a small red light that says cool down, any ideas what might be wrong? This little light was flashing and after about 3-4 mins the light stopped flashing and the tractor shut down.

Some machines need to run fr a few mins to cool down before turning off. Some take five mins before turning automatically turning off.

Some also have an emergency stop fitted to instantly force the machine to turn off. Does yours have this? Ask the previous owner, sounds like he took good care of the machine and wasn't afraid to spend money on a system like that. Any pics?

Also, does it do this when started cold and turned off before it has reached operating temp?

Previous owner is no longer with us im afraid. Yes it does have emergency shut down and a beeper thats lets you know when its ready to start, could be just coolant problem or maybe dirty radiator, grille screens as i was disc harrowing in dusty conditions.

Just reading instructions for a Stihl chainsaw yesterday and it said to let the saw tick over on idle for a while after using to let it cool properly.

I'd say it has a turbo timer fitted. It ll only let it switch off when the turbo cools down.

Yep, it sounds like a turbo timer or something similar all right.

most tractors with a turbo need to be idled for while before turning off espically after hard work. there is usually a sign in teh cab warning to do this. some of the newer machines had this doen automatically when the engine temp was reading high. like the suburu and hilux surfs

Its to allow the oil to circulate in the turbo to cool it down. if you dont do it you can make s**t of your turbo.

The thing is we have had the tractor a few years and this has never happened before.

if its an automated system then there may be an issue with the temp sensor. It may be reading the oil temp is higher then it is. Also it could be working perfectly but your engine is getting hotter then it used to.

Check the connections, clean out the rad and power wash the area around it to make its cooling. check your water pump etc
