Was wondering what you guys think is worse, people trolling or those who get all worked up by it?

Heard recently of a guy who set up an account, purposely started posting lots of really insightful and helpful comments in serious forums for a few weeks just so he could build some credibility before doing a bit of trolling.

I laughed at first at the ridiculous amount of effort he went to just to annoy people he will never know but woneered what your thoughts were.

I appreciate intelligent trolling, but the more common stupid forms do my head in.

The best troll I saw was on the NAACP facebook page where the troll argued the simple existence of the organisation creates a barrier to getting people to ignore color, the opposite of what it's trying to achieve.

There were dozens of angry morons incapable of forming a cohesive argument smashing away on their keyboards in response before it got deleted. Absolutely beautiful work.

But simply harassing someone or using much more simplistic methods are worthy of nothing but a contemptuous glance.

trolling is in the eye of the beholder.

some people call it trolling, others might call it another side to a story.

if it's personal attacks/insults etc, then it's not exactly trolling.

On this site, it's getting harder and harder to tell which are the trolls and which are the genuine drivelling imbeciles

One of my most successful trolling quests resulted in 3 separate death threats through private message on Facebook.....

"ill catch you ya lil dope ya"

Yeah i did a bit through facebook to a load of pro gun Americans. I didnt start out trolling but they reacted with anger to a genuine question. It went on from there, death threats and so on.
To be honest its harder to troll a dog then an American.

Trolling done properly is an art. It takes skill to execute a good trolling, and i applaude those able to do it.

Worse for me, are the people who get worked up.

    Thread needs a poll.

Calling 'troll' is also a handily lazy non-response to valid questioning in various forums here that attract a particularly uniform mindset. One in particular. I'll let ye guess which. Hint: tinfoil.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

The word 'Trolling' is thrown around too easy. Some people would tell you a joke and say 'Ha, you've just been trolled!'.

    No.

    god im lonely :(
I think its time to pull the plug on facebook by the sounds of it. Find a hobby you can work at outside or something.

Yeah, I think loads more people are becoming social media/discussion board literate, it accounts (and has done for quite a while) for all the sh1te that people post here and on FB etc.

Every monkey has access to a keyboard now and they most certainly retain the right to become offended at what ever crap is being talked about.

Its become way to easy to troll and the majority of it has been seen before.

I enjoy trolling fox news stuff on facebook. With their blaming policy as bad = obama did it, good = god did it it isnt very difficult. I would prefer to have the skills to troll intelligent people but that would take more effort than typing first thing I think of

Subtlety is the key to masterful trolling, slowly working your victim in to a hot lather.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭KyussBishop

It's tricky sometimes, to properly pin down when someone is actually trolling.

Sometimes the 'troll' starts off a discussion seriously (actually believing what they are saying), but their views are so discreditable and hard to defend, that they start pretending to troll, so they can avoid losing face by defending their discreditable views, then they try to 'win' the argument through trolling (they'll still pretend to be having a serious argument as well).

These people aren't trolls, even though they pretend to be, they are just dishonest and looking to engage in soapboxing (just with the dishonest 'out', that they can pretend they were just trolling).

A real troll, doesn't usually believe what they are saying; when the person actually believes it, and pretends to be trolling, it's just dishonesty.

I don't think it's really fair to call people troll online because you're completely taking merit out of that poster.
People can see through trolls on their own accord without the need of someone posting a troll alert directed at someone.
Obviously there's that pighead fella up in Dundalk who trolls on here but he's funny and everyone knows its just some mucker with too much free time having a laugh.

Most trolling is just retarded stuff though.

Since when do trolls have merit?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I think the term is largely meaningless. I've been called a troll when I've been posting in good faith and, on the other hand, have wound people up to the point where they've gotten infractions (is that trolling?) with no action having been taken so the whole trolling thing just confuses me.

Is this trolling or just having a laugh.

    Someone posts this pic.
    Me

It's funny because it looks like he's giving the Nazi salute and Angela Merkel would know all about Nazism because she was a high ranking official in the Nazi party during WWII and is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

    Lulz.
    Fish on hook:

Angela Merkel is not old enough to have been in the Nazi Party in ww2, never mind having been responsible for the deats of tens of thousands of people, what a nasty slur to cast!
    Me

She looks young for her age.

Anyway here's proof that she was in the Nazi party during WWII.
    Fish on hook:

No thats just proof of your idiocy and immaturity, thats all that is!

    *infracted*
    Me

I suppose you'll be telling me Hitler wasn't German next or something?

You can't accept the facts, that's all.
    Fish on hook:

    Nice one dude, nice one!:D

........ and I very nearly fell for it
    Me:

Ah you fell for it a small bit now in fairness. :pac:

Trolling or just having a laugh?
