Insuring cattle in factory

Last year I sent cattle to Devlin (I think) and the insurance (so called) cost €5 per head. On querying I was told it was not optional.

This is the highest charge I've ever come across and, in all other factories, it's been optional. Surely it's illegal not to have it optional? Could the Insurance Ombudsman disbar it?

Want to know the best bit, if they do skip a cow they will tell you she wasnt aproved for insurance. Surely its up to any business to have its own insuarance.

Fees in factories are very questionable. Even vets fees add up on a weekly kill to an amount much greater than vets are actually paid (which is a lot)

If your own farm package covers the cattle already surely they have to waive the fee? If not see if your insurer will give you a rebate/discount for the double cover.

No, because it's optional to use their services.

When does an animal change ownership? You open the ramp at factory and drive off. Who owns the animal while it is still alive? Something I never really thought about.

I imagine, until you get paid it's yours.

you cant expect cows that are on there last legs to be insured or injured animals to be insured. Its for healthy animals that get injured on the premises. I had a bull for €1600 hang himself from a gate a couple of years ago in the factory and claimed on the insurance. Regarding vet fees these are collect on behalf of the dept of Ag if im not mistaken and they inturn pay the vets. doing the calculations in my head the vet fees seem right in whats charged. insurance in most places is €2 for young animals and €5 for cows and old bulls

When I think of it now I always specify 'no insurance'. The Devlin place didn't allow an opt out; the €5 charge there was for young cattle. Have never got a penny back in 40 years.

Many years ago a neighbour sent 3 cows to the factory. One was condemned and he got nothing and they charged the insurance for the other two!!

Also factories will not accept a permanent instruction not to deduct insurance. It can be done each time at check-in.

Also, the company doesn't keep the insurance money. They don't get any benefit from charging for insurance.

Don't believe that. If so why would it be €1.50 in some factories and €5.00 in others? And not optional in the latter?
