small, economical, plenty space in it, reliable, great resale value too.

no N.C.T but a phonecall could see you driving away in a car that will be worth 3 grand in 2/3 years time. http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4955440

    Thanks.
Quick suggestions seem to point towards Toyota and Honda.
What about Micras fords volks wagon etc?
    Is smaller engine better?

Yes, I would suggest if looking at a ford focus or a VW golf that the 1.4 petrol is the best model to go for.

Plenty of poke and quick to accelerate.

The two most underpowered 1.4's out at the time coincidently.

No way? I thought that they would be best!

The engine is so big and the cars are not heavy for their size at all! No way would it be stressed or anything

    Any views about Nissan micra?

You could manage it, though it would be quite small with a baby, plus all the gear that goes with one.

What does that mean now? I'm a bit naive re terminology.

Hmm so consensus is on toyota corolla 1.4 or honda jazz 1.4?

you won't fit a buggy, changing bag, etc in the boot; also there isn't enough space in the back for a proper car seat

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,874 ✭✭✭padma

As in a buggy, Bag full of baby parephernalia, blankets etc, with a baby, and two adults, the micra would be uncomfortable. A corolla is a solid reliable car for a 1.3, 1.4, Also a Honda Civic is another reliable car which has a bit of space. The Jazz, is a nice reliable car, but not everyones cup of tea, but could be easy on insurance. Just look up models on donedeal, see what feels good for you and research the car for reliability.

If it's a hassle free economical reliable car your after, then a Corolla is the best car to buy in my experience. :)

The one that is low enough for someone to consider it cheap, but high enough so the seller thinks he is getting a good price

    Extremely diplomatic reply!
What that offer should be as a neutral person:)

That car has the front end from a Saloon version which suggests to me that it's been crashed. Id be avoiding that car as a result.

If you look at another hatchback version you will see they have a completely different front end to the car in the ad.

It's also a prefacelift front end on the car above. Even if that car was a Saloon there would be something iffy about it because it should have the facelift front end being an 06 example.

It's also got the interior of a Strata and what looks like a Terra badge at the back?

According to motorcheck it's a terra spec https://www.motorcheck.ie/free-car-check/06d19686

so the badge on the boot appears to be genuine and parts of the interior like the steering wheel with the controls seems to have been added later by someone.

So is it worth checking out further or there is some foul play?

No id move on from that car and keep searching. That car isn't genuine at all, be patient, take your time and you will come across something much nicer than that car.

There are at least 2 if not more different shades of grey on that car, also what's with the muppetry of tinting the front headlights?

I'd be looking at something like these:

These were excellent cars. But there is only one left by the time I called and that one is in westmeath, I'm also not very fond of green color. Can few more similar recommendations be made for Dublin area.
    Really appreciate.

What sort of mileage. I have an 03 NCT for about a year (has t be done every year) with 115000 miles on her now and I was offered 3750 from a lad I know who wanted an avensis. I said no. If he offered me 4000 I would have said yes.

probably get this for about 5000 plus or minus a few hundred

You should have bitten his hand off. €3750 for a 10 year old Avensis is top dollar when you can buy a 05 for €5k.

clutch has been changed on mine it is serviced every 5000 miles with fully synthetic oil. Engine and gearbox are perfect. Recently the bottom of the gearstick had to get a clean and some lubrication but apart from that she doesnt give any trouble.

I wasnt looking to sell my car because I am very happy with it so I would have to get a premium for selling it.

Also http://www.carzone.ie/search/Toyota/Avensis/Toyota-A/201311213657520/advert?channel=CARS is looking for more than 4 and looks very similar to my car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Not trying to get side tracked here but what that guy asks for his and what he actually sells it for are two different things and that advert was last updated 92 days ago. Here is one from a dealer for less and there is probably a bit of fat built into that asking price along with some sort of warranty:
    http://www.driving.ie/used-cars/Toyota/Avensis/STRATA-4DR/36113686129837780/

Also while getting the clutch replaced by the current owner is a bonus for any potential buyer they are not going to pay for that in any asking price. A clutch is a wear and tear item and spending money on such things on any car to bring it up to a working or sellable condition in most cases doesn't add anything to it's market value other than it might make it quicker to sell.

May as well say that the sub 3k post 02 corolla hatchback market is a total minefield with so many substandard ones around.

Be prepared for plenty cars that look ok in the pictures but are an absolute mess in reality, messers that agree to meet you at the other side of the country when the car is already sold.
The popularity of these cars means that there's always someone silly enough to buy the bad ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 360 ✭✭Nicknamed

I'm thinking even if I have to travel outa dublin to get a good car. I will go for that too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The good ones won't be the cheap ones. Anyone selling a good one will be usually asking strong money.

That car is still wet from being washed so be prepared for it not being as shiny in real life. Ad is a bit light on details, but i can tell you its a 3 owner car, which for 10 years isn't unusual.

Nice spec anyway (uk), I'd be looking for pics of the
small few cosmetic marks and scratches but nothing which would affect the cars performance.
Full service history is a plus.

Its pretty much accepted that that's the worst colour on the corolla. It looks ok after a good polish but is a nightmare to keep clean and every scratch shows up.

If you like the colour then fair enough.

If you are going to view this car watch out for rust on the underbody as while these Corollas aren't particularly prone to rust I have seen some uk examples from the north of England and Scotland with rust underneath particularly where the rear shock absorbers and springs meet the body of the car.
