Archbishop Martin calls for tds to have a free vote on the abortion bill because it is "a matter of conscience".

Following his logic through, should he not be advocating a referendum to have on-demand abortion, so that, being "a matter of conscience", individuals can decide freely whether they want to have an abortion or not?

Is there good logic in his position without this follow-on, or, is his statement cynically illogical in order to try to achieve the outcome he wants ?
Or even, has the church changed its tune, and is moving towards advocating pro-choice ?

He's calling for a free vote so the TD's don't have to follow the party line of a yes vote.

It's utterly cynical. How many of its own members has the church silenced when they try to speak out against the RC church dogma? Matters of conscience don't seem to be of relevance within their own organisation.

Please use the the search function to find the most recent thread on abortion, or the religion & spirituality forums for all things religion.

    Thanks.
