RenoVate!?

I went for a pint at 11pm with a good pal of mine. We were having a chin wag when I noticed a pint glass of white powder sitting beside the glass washer. I asked him what it was ( he has work in bars for many years both here an NZ), he was unsure.
We asked the barman and he said it is 'RenoVate, we throw some (Ice cube trowel amount) in every 20 washes or so'. My mate was really very suprised over this to the point he got annoyed about it. He said that RenoVate is basically an industrial chemical used for getting the nasty gunk from the inside of glasses that builds up over time. It's used for steeping glasses in for a couple of hours every 3/4 weeks or so, NOT for washing. The barman said that this was normal practice everywhere and essentially its not a big deal whatsoever.

Is this common place? Is my mate going over the top? Are the Bar staff being Lazy shaggers?

    Many Thanks

    Mankyspuds.

That stuff is great for getting the glasses up shiny and new but should only be used once a week and rinsed off well.

This is not done everywhere and not to that extent.

In work we have around 20,000 glasses stored so we don't really use RenoVate, but I've never heard of anywhere doing it that often.

What I find strange is the 20 washes or so, that's gonna stick around for about 3-4 washes either way, it should only be used in a clean dishwasher, and a lot of newer dishwashers have Renovation settings which take fooking ages.
