I'm heading over to the TDF for the Alpe D'Huez stage. We'll at the base of the mountain early evening on the day before the stage. Does anyone know if we'll be able drive up the mountain that evening? Or is there transport to get up (cable cars) and we can leave the car in Bourg D'Oisins?

We're heading to Col D'Madeleine Friday morning so perhaps it's better to leave the car at the base of the mountain?

Any advice on the handiest way would be greatly appreciated.

Been a regular visitor to the TDF over the last 4 years. Been to 15 stages in total and was at Alpe D'huez stage in 2010. From experience unless you arrive in Bourg D'Oisans AT LEAST 2 days before the stage you will not get near the top in a car.
Also parking in Bourg itself is not particularly easy and my advice is park as far as possible outside the town while still being within walking distance of the climb. The traffic afterwards is something that has to be experinced to be believed! There are no cable cars to the top either.
What i would advice is either bring bikes and cycle that morning up, or do what we did ourselves and walked 4 bends up the climb, which is the steepest ramp on the climb and you will see them twice on the day. It is about a half hour walk to the fourth bend, bring water!
All in all this stage has the makings to be legendary and I've never experienced anything like the atmosphere that day. I can only imagine what it will be like this year with two ascents of the Alpe. Enjoy!!:D

Thanks to both of you. That was very useful.

I think the plan will be to park somewhere in Bourg D'Oisin the evening before. We can lug the beers, water and tent up the mountain, somewhere close to Dutch Corner!!

definitely bring bikes...you wont get near the village or the climb on the day.

my only trip to the tour was in 2009 and i arrived on Ventoux the day before the stage that finished atop there & could only get as close as 7-8k from the summit on some back road. Mental crowds for the queen stages

Can't realy find a definite answer for this.

If I arrive in Grenoble a few days before can I get a bus to Alp D'Huez village itself 2 days before the race?
    Hopefully camp out then!
