Lens Hoods?

    Hiya all!

I have never had a lens hood and I don't know anyone who has one but I am interested in getting one as I am getting a new camera. I am just wondering what I should look out for and if they all fit every lens?

I am currently ordering the Canon 7D with a 20-135mm IS Canon lens. There is an accessories kit that I am looking into buying and the lens hood that comes with it is a 58mm Hard lens hood. Will this be useless or should I get the kit.

FYI the kit also comes with a 2.5x telephoto and a 0.45x super wide angle high def lens
58mm UV, polarizer, & FLD Deluxe Filters
58mm 4-piece close up lens set
    the lens hood
    cleaning kits
    tripod

So what do you all think?

Could you provide a link to the kit?

In general lens hoods would be designed for a specific lens, so it can provide protection from stray light hiding the front of the lens at both the wide and long ends of the zoom range.
Also any tripod that comes in a kit like that probably won’t be any good under a 7D

To be honest I don't really need the tripod but everything else I have already got advice on so it was just for the lens hood.

Yes a lens hood would be a good idea. They provide protection from stray light when taking pictures while also offering some physical protection to the font element of the lens. Just be sure to get the correct lens hood for your lens. Too short and it will offer no protection, too long and you could end up with a shadow around the edge of your photographs.

the cheaper lens hoods dont have a felt lined interior and can cause light to reflect off the hood into the glass. Also some screw in where the filter goes, these are a disaster to use IMHO

Im pretty sure non L canon lenses dont come with a hood

There also is no 20-135 lens only an 18-135 and 28-135 both use different hoods

    the 18 uses EW-73B
    the 28 uses EW-78BII

PS, i'd be fairly certain that every piece of that kit is garbage, just get the Body/lens or even better 7d with 17-40 L lens

Sorry i miss typed I mean 28. I have bought accessory kits before when I bought my first camera and everything was great! I am just wondering what sort of lens hood I should be getting if that lens hood would work.

I'd be very worried about the filters. Your spending around 1500 on body and glass and sticking a 5 euro filter on top. The amount of design that goes to creating a lens and the coatings to reduce flare etc ruined by a cheap piece of glass. The hood will fit, it would be the least of my worries tbh

This like buying a Ferrari and putting nangkang tyres on it

Sounds like the best place to put the accessory kit is in the bin.

    check this out

and these are semi pro filters being compared with pro. Dread to think what the crap filters you get on ebay

Get the proper hood, or a cheap copy if you must, but don't buy an accessory kit. It's totally useless crap. Lens hoods are different for most lenses. Those converters are aimed at people who don't know any better. Just because it says "0.45x super wide angle high def lens" doesn't mean it's HD or super wide.

    also the 28-135 has a 72mm thread not 58mm....
