Have a listen to this Skeptoid episode, or at least read the transcript. (Assuming you haven't already - it addresses this exact question.) It's not the final word on the topic, but I agree with the general consensus: there have been real conspiracies, but they've never matched well with prior conspiracy theories.

The general opinion out there now is that Oswald didn't act alone and JFK had many enemy's in his administration including top Military brass rouge CIA elements , Mafia ,Cuban refugees and southern Texans and JFK himself was aware that many had it in for him but as president and ' A Kennedy ' had by his own standards to seen to be above all fear .

The CIA got wind of this through bugging the presidents phone and the rouge elements ,using Oswald as the patsy and fall guy ,got the Cubans to play their part to .There were 3 separate reports of planned assassination of JFK just weeks before the actual assassination in Dallas ( Tampa and Miami were two places were recorded underworld conversations about attempts on Kennedys life were on file and a Cuban with a gun was known to be in the crowd when JFK addressed the crowd at the Orange Bowl Miami to )

One of the best books on the Kennedy brothers /assassination's I have read recently is this book ' Brothers '

I used to think that, but i'm now leaning towards a conspiracy involving him, but he was the lone shooter.

one of the more recent investigations looked into the time he took to pull off the three shots, which for many years was believed to be about 6 seconds. many claimed such shooting was beyond his skill, pointing to a second shooter. I think most people think Oswald was a lone gunman so that does not count. I think what we are finding out is the basic gist of an elite/cabal snooping and manipulating things. Only they just happen to be our governments and not Jews or whatever.

With regard JFK, there is the proven conspiracy theory that the KGB planted conspiracy theory "evidence" to make it look as though there were greater forces at play. Wrap your head around that one.

It was proven Nixon conspired to extend the war in Vietnam to boost his ratings in the general election and win a second term.

When a conspiracy theory is proved true, the tinfoil hats simply move onto the next one. Once there's no paranoia involved, there's really no point. It doesn't feed the fantasy any more.

A bit like alternative medicine. Once the active ingredient is identified and isolated/synthesized, hippies lose interest and move on to the next crackpotopathy.

Historians mainly rely on first hand , eye witnesses accounts of any event to ' write History ' .The Warren Commission report wrote off the testimony's of hundreds of people ( including JFK man , Ken O Donnell who was riding behind in the next Limo ) simply because it didn't fit in with their own ( and the CIA 's ) official findings but it was all about reassuring and calming an American public who still believed that their government wouldn't lie to them .

I saw a documentary once that put forward the explanation that JFK was shot by JFK with some help from space/time travellers who returned to 1963 because they had ran out of curry.

I suppose that the events of Watergate would have been a conspiracy theory in their time and that was definitely proved true.

Also, closer to home, Bloody Sunday. While most Irish people would have known what happened, their version of events would have seemed like a conspiracy theory to the British public.

i think another one that will come soon is the whole obama birth certificate . i seen today the department of justice and fbi raided a building where they claimed to have evidence of the certificate being faked....the only info they will reveal about the raid is that it was lawful under the USA Patriot Act

Ah now, if there's a conspiracy at work there its that the good ol' boys can't take the fact that they're governed by a black man, instead of owning him. Doesn't fit the model I know. I mean, the president is the one who's supposed to be doing the conspiring, isn't he?!? He's the government. Right?

funny, I know personally on police officer (now LOOOOONG retired) who was at Altnagelvin Hospital as the injured were arriving.

he took several home made grenades from the pockets of at least two of those innocent bystanders who were mowed down by those foreign troops......

Of course as part of the peace process here it was easier to hold up hands and say a bunch of squaddies screwed up 40 years ago, than it was to risk the truth getting out that SOME of the victims were active players.....
