Reading glasses advice

I bought my first pair of reading glasses from the Opticians (these came with a free pair of sunglasses offer, total cost €275), but find that when reading small writing I have to take them off to see the letters properly!
At certain distances there is an improvement though, am I just being picky or is this usual for reading glasses?
On a side note, I asked for the same lenses as my ordinary(non reading) glasses to be put in the sunglasses, and these too are blurry compared to my ordinary ones.
I feel that for the price I paid, I'm not getting value for money and don't feel they're fir for purpose. Ill be bringing the sun glasses back, but with regards the reading glasses is that the norm?
Am I entitled to a refund? retest ?

Brought them back, the Optician found that the prescription as not entered correctly, hence everything askew. Got the new pairs today and all is well. (apart from the fact the clouds are coming and I missed the best weekend of the year for wearing shades!
