Hi, we recently purchased an old cottage and we will be keeping the existing corrugated tin roof as its in good condition and we simply cannot afford to replace it, the cottage is very dark inside and we were thinking of installing veluxes (expensive) so im just wondering if anyone on here can advise us on alternatives ( a homemade solution so to speak) we are on a very tight budget so cost is a major factor. Was thinking about old small double glazed windows, could this be done ?? we don't need the windows to open all we want is more light. Any advice would be great, thanks :)

I know this is not any help really but i saw a news report a few months ago about an entrepreneur in a little shanty town in India or somewhere, where he was filling empty 2l plastic bottles with water and a bit of bleach and inserting them into the corrugated roofs of the shanty as all of the people living in them (only a few feet square) lived in darkness.

It really touched me as they showed the before and after and the amazement and gratitude and wonder of the people who got one was lovely to see, and made me, as ever, very grateful for the standard of living we have here.

Although maybe you could do it - like spotlights. The sunlight they reflected was amazing. Maybe someone here knows the science behind it and then you could install a few - very ecofriendly, cheap and you can replace them yourself every few years like lightbulbs...
