Ford Focus sounding strange after long drive

I have a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI. Lately, if i'm driving for more than an hour or so, if I'm driving fast there what can be best described as a ticking coming from the engine. If I stop at lights or whatever though, the engine sounds almost like a lawnmower! If it's parked up then for a short period of time, or even a minute or two, and turned on again it sounds the same for a couple of seconds, before seemingly clearing itself and sounding normal again.

Now the car is driving perfectly, so i'm just wondering if there is a problem with filters or something? I haven't had the chance to bring it in to a mechanic as of yet but will be in the coming week. Just wondering if anyone has heard of something similar?

had same symptom (as well a very slight vibration) on 1.8tdci it was dmf starting to brake up ..the next time it do it. push the clutch pedal to the floor and if the "ticking noise" stop dmf is on the way out

What would the cost be to get a replacement? Ball park figure.

There's no dmf in a 1.6tdci focus only the 1.8.
Edit after looking there the 110bhp version could have a dmf. The 90bhp doesn't have one I have this version. So it depends which version your car is.

A ticking noise on a 1.6 tdci/hdi (dv6 engine) would point me towards a leaking injector seal(s)....very common on these engines.
Are there any fumes in around the engine bay/cabin when the engine is running..?

I agree with Row, it could be an injector seal. If you pull off the engine cover a very distinct "chuffing" noise can be heard and you will find a tar-like substance oozing from the problem injector. A very common problem and some garages can almost do them with their eyes closed!
