Passat gear lever gaiter removal?

    Anyone know how to remove the gear lever gaiter on a Passat? I assuming it clips off somehow but am afraid to force it out of incase it is attached by some other means.

    - Open the ash tray and pull out the removable part
    - There are two screws at the bottom of the ashtray holder, remove them and pullout the whole unit, including cigerette lighter socket.
    - Once removed grab the front/top of the plastic surrounding the bottom of the gather (the plastic rim) and pull it upward. Be gentle and use both hands spread across as pulling it from the middle is likely to snap it.
