'98 Volkswagen Caddy key help

    Hi all,

I would like to get another key cut for my '98 VW Caddy SDI.

There has been a push button fitted to start (will only fire up if key is at 2nd position) as the ignition barrel went funny.

Do ye guys know if I can just get an ordinary key cut? Or is this something I;'ll need to go to the dealer about?

    Cheers :)

I would imagine there is an immobilizer in a car of that vintage. The push button is irrelevant in this situation. The key will need to be programmed to the car, so a trip to the main dealers is in order. I know some dedicated auto locksmiths can also do this now. If there is a blinking red led in the car, usually on the dash somewhere you have an immobilizer.

    Thanks for your reply.
****e. I was hoping you wouldn't say that.

There is no red LED anywhere though. But even if the van is hot she won't start on the button.

Is there any other way of checking if there's an immobiliser?

it may not have an immobiliser, to check you could open the key and see if theres a small chip inside it or take off the plastic cowling around the steering wheel, and if theres a black ring like the one in the link below. if there is then it has an immobiliser
