Just caught the end of the bbc watchdog programme and they are doing a part in next Wednesday's programme with the line " the problem that BMW know about their engines but aren't telling the public "

Could be interesting to hear BMW's response to this?

It has to be the timing chain problem in the 2 litre N47 diesel engine!

    I was thinking this too.

Could also be the coil packs and injectors on the 4 cylinder petrol engines also or a new problem?

It won't matter because whatever happens in the UK won't be implemented here.

Uk would be a start. Vw eventually gave in on injectors after people copped that they were being covered in uk & north.

Or the High Pressure Fuel Pump on the N54 3 litre petrol!

It won't be like an rte show where the stock line is "we rang BMW for an answer but they refused to talk to us"

What was that about BMW being the most trusted brand In Ireland this year....?

It's about time BMW was exposed for inflicting such an expensive design fault on their customers, hopefully they will discover there IS such a thing as bad publicity.

Got a laugh when I heard the results of that survey. Who says marketing doesn't work?

That didn't really happen much to EUDM N54's but what they really should look into with this engine is the wastegates on the 2 turbos. They replaced all of these FOC (along with the HPFP) in the US on an extended warranty program.

I've replaced my rear turbo all at my own expense with not 1 bit of input from BMW.

I'd love to know the real reason for the irish customer not getting the same "benefits" as the UK or elsewhere.

I think BWM Ireland are a subsidiary of BMW UK??? So perhaps it could.

Also I believe there was an RTE consumer type show on not so long ago featuring BMW drivers chasing up the problems with their cars (and getting no where) think Philip Boucher Hayes presented it, spoke to Indy mechanics and a rep from SIMI, and yeah i think BKW were unavailable to comment. Might still be on the iPlayer if anyone wants to go look.

The PBH bit might explain why they got nowhere, he's always long on story and short on facts.

one of the RTE programs covered BMW faults a while back, think it was the consumer show or something but it featured cars that just cut out by themselves while driving. here is some info: http://www.rte.ie/tv/theconsumershow/bmw.html

just missed it on the RTE player.

That was on the injectors on the petrol.

They didn't really say much of any value, though they did mention BMW gw if you had fsh

Just watched it there, nothing much new mentioned only a few stories of ppl getting good will money on a case by case bases if u have bmw service history..
FFS BMW just admit you made a crock of an engine and recall every single car and sort it out!

i doubt they will give good will to cover the whole cost.. from the show most of them are at 4K sterling and above to rectify.. and BMW have sold how many 1 series, 3 series and 5 series?? I reckon that will be the last thing they'll do

They're probably covering the parts and owner pays labour or vice versa. Well I don't see why owners should be out of pocket for something like the timing chain snapping especially having paid a premium for a "ultimate driving machine" maintained it as per their guidelines and then be forced to pay €4-5000+ for a design flawed issue.
If they don't wish to issue a recall then they should be forced to replace every timing chain that snaps on the n47 engine where the car has fsh or near enough.
This is what Toyota are currently doing with the 2.2 dodgey head gaskets I was told.
    That's my opinion anyway!

Timing chain issues is all that was mentioned.

I thought it would be that the brake pedal is disabled so they tailgate you all the way down the motorway.

    No mention of swirl flaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭picturehangup

Have just had this problem with my 3 series (2008). BMW have offered to pay cost of parts plus 20% labour, still leaving me to fork out 2 grand for a manufacturing error. I am refusing to pay this, and will seek legal advice. We pay high price for BMW and have high expectations, hence BMW should do the decent thing. Most trusted car brand?? Ultimate driving machine?> Wouldn't trust them with a bike after this! Anyone else anything new to report?

    Did you lose much?

Puposely bought a 07 520D after reading the horror stories!
Sure enough the tax is higher but felt too risky

Yes, know what you mean. I have totally fallen out of love with my beemer. Second hand value on these cars will plummet over the next few months as more of these cases become more frequent. Going to get shut of it too.

No I bought the car in February 13 for €16k including vrt, taxed it for a year and sold it for 16300 so didn't work out bad at all!.

Are you sure you haven't got the N47 engine in that? It was introduced in March 2007 although it might not have been in the E60 until September.

There are a few 2008 E60s with the older M47 engine. The E60 got a facelift in March 2007 but didn't get the N47 engine until late 2007.

It appeared in the background check (cartell.ie) without even having to pay the fee:
    D M SPORT Z5SH 4DR AUTO E60 SALOON M47 2.0

It's an auto too - has the old gear stick.

    Would a car like this : D ES ZS10 4DR VG92 / E90 EDITON N47 2.0 be a compete no no, http://www.capitalcars.ie/used-cars/BMW/3-Series/320-D/36613690706988090/

How much does it cost to solve the problem before it breaks?

It's not possible to do preventative work without doing almost as much as it would take to do the repair, so you take your chances. Not all chains break but I don't know what the percentage is.

It is said that changing the oil more frequently can help. This is not a bad idea anyway because the BMW recommended interval is two years / 20+ k miles (which is lunacy).

I could be wrong but 4-5k (from a good indy BMW mechanic) seems to ring a bell.
