Hard drive shipping? Help needed!

    Hi!

So I guess you guys see a lot of stuff arriving via post...

I bought a couple of hard drives recently from different vendors.

Vendor #1 - The drive was in a fitted transparent plastic case,
with foam packing above and below,
then in a fitted cardboard box,
then *that* box was wrapped in cardboard wadding and shipped in an even larger box :)

Vendor #2 - The drives were wrapped in thin bubble wrap,
one layer deep, placed in the bottom of a cardboard box and...
the cardboard wadding was placed over them like a blanket

So all the protection the drive had in transit was that one thin layer of bubble wrap between it and the ground :(

There's a tear in one corner of the drive's silver wrap that matches with up with a tear in the thin bubble wrap.

    So...

Should I reject and return the poorly packed drives without even taking it out of the silver wrap?

    Am I over-reacting?

Just how tough (or not) is a hard drive anyway?

    Advice appreciated,

    - B

I think you are over reacting a little. The first vendors wrapping looks like over kill, the 2nd looks a little sub par but personally I would not be worried. Hard drives are reasonably durable to small knocks once they are not powered on.

Aye the reading head would be in the rested position which wouldn't be over the platter so it shouldn't be able to contact it when powered off.

    You are not overreacting.

The first one is packed correctly. The plastic, foam and small cardboard box are manufacturer spec packaging. Manufacturers squeeze every penny and they would not ship drives like that unless it was 100% necessary. Putting inside another box, yes that is overkill but it may simply be the way that vendor ships things.

The second one is inadequately packed. Put it this way: if you ever need to RMA a drive and you send it back to the manufacturer like that, they will reject the RMA on account of inadequate packing.

It is much more likely to fail during its life and may even be DOA. If you can reject it without being out of pocket I would do so. I have done it a few times when Amazon shipped drives like that.

    Unfortunately not :(

BTW in case anyone wants to know, the super-careful packaged drives came from DABS :pac: (oops edit in case you think I was being sarcastic - I'm not! - the top quality packaging was an order from them)

    Thanks for the thoughts lads,
