    Don't have a hmr but do have a bore tech cleaning rod for my .223 and it is fantastic. Not even sure they make a rod thin enough for a .17 but if you're after an excellent cleaning rod, that it was what I would try and track down.

    Tipton rods seem ok and perfectly useable from the ones I have handled so I would also get one of them (again if thin enough for a .17) if available locally.

    Don't have a .17 either but another vote for Bore-Tech. I have steadily replaced all my rifle & shotgun rods with Bore-Tech ones. Nothing comes close to their performance, and quality.

    I might be speaking out of turn but in a recent group buy a lad involved bought one, with heads, and changed his rifle to another caliber in the 2 weeks since ordering to receiving the rod. He might have it for sale. Maybe stick up a wanted advert in the for sale section.

    Other rods i've owned (for other calibers) are;
    • Tipton - Good enough, little tight, not well protected, poor bearing.
    • Parker Hale - Decent rod, bit "flimsy" in feel, slightly narrow for the caliber it was intended for, and the bearing in the handle was crap and broke on the 6.5 one, but fine on the .22 rods. Also found the protective coating on the shaft peeled very easily.
    • Hoppes - Decent build quality. Handle bearing not too free. Rod body/shaft too thick for the designated caliber, (imo) head of rod nearly wider than body which may lead to contact with chamber/bore.

    I researched them before but never ended up getting one though. Got a borsnake for now.

    One thing I did read a lot though was be sure to get one designed for the .17 rifles and not .177air rifles. the rifle is about .172 and the other .176 or there abouts and its not much of a difference but the .177 ones are meant to be tough to push through a hmr. since its such a small diameter.

    I use a tetra gun 17 cleaning rod ( one piece) - does the job

    I have also used most brands of cleaning rods and recently got a bore-tech rod for my 204.
    Its the best quality rod of them all,
    I also got a bore-tech jag and brushes and they are also great.
    The bore-tech .17 and .20 cal brushes are shorter than those made by others and are a lot easier to push through the smaller bores.

    Only one dealer used to hold a stock of them, but has not done so in a while hence the reason why i organised the group buy.

    There is a company in the UK that does them, but with the group buy it was cheaper to buy direct from the US. So i've no idea about shipping costs, etc. The rods were £44 then whatever cost for jags, mops, and then shipping.

    I ordered mine from www.brownells.com
    I think the shipping cost around 40 dollars.
