Places to view large flocks of birds

    Hi all,

Just wondering if people know of good spots to view large numbers of birds flocking together in the evening (or morning, or anytime of day)?

I'd be particularly interested in seeing Starlings. I watched The Secret Life of the Shannon, so obviously they flock near the Shannon, but where exactly on its 340km long course would there be an ideal viewing point?

An example I can give people myself would be on the grounds of Castle Leslie hotel in Glaslough, Co. Monaghan. There you can see large numbers of crows (20,000 I believe) flying across the lake in the evenings of winter and spring. Not sure if you'd have to be staying there or at least eat there in order to access the right spot. It is quite spectacular.

I've also witness large numbers of Plovers flying above the curragh racecourse but it wasn't as dramatic as the starling murmurations I've seen footage of or as the crows in Glaslough.

    Thanks all.

The vast majority of birds aren't flocking at the moment - they're breeding! Winter is the best time for flocking birds, and the early morning and late evening are the best times to see them!

    Thanks for the reply.

Any tips for good locations (anyone)?

    Rogerstown Estuary, Dublin
    Bull Island, Dublin
    Dundalk Bay, Louth
    North Slob, Wexford

-All good places on the eastern side of the country where you can get good views of decent sized flocks of waders and geese

I'd imagine that Boora in Offaly and the Shannon Callows/Little Brosna would have decent flocks of birds in winter too, but they'd be harder to 'pin down' in one location I'd say!

I have no real knowledge of places on the west but theres plenty of spots in Mayo and Donegal that are good too
