Hi, hope someone here can help, I know very little about cars so I will try to explain the issue I am having and maybe I can get it sorted

    I have a 97 VW Polo,

    1) When it is idyling (at traffic lights etc..) the fan under the bonnet starts to kick in and sounds like a helicopter, seems to be working overtime!

    2) The rev counter when I am driving on M50 @100km starts to get higher than normal.

    3) Radio has suddenly stopped working the light comes on but no sound or station comes on.

    4) I brought it to a local mechanic who told me ''the fan bearing has gone'' and said it can be driven but I need a new complete fan?

I thought it was spark plugs or coolant not getting to radiator..

Sorry if my thread is all over the place, if someone can help please

Well if its making a horrendous racket then the bearings have gone dry and sooner or later it'll seize.

Rev counter goes up while the engine remains the same I takes?

    Can you try another radio?

Hi thanks for the reply, I can't try another radio & the mechanic had mentioned bearings gone on the fan, do I need to replace the whole fan or can the bearing be adjusted?
