golf, engine code on block?

I picked up a golf with an engine that's not it's original and is a different variant to the original - where on the block is the engine code stamped? It's a '00 car with a 1.4 petrol engine.

should be on the timing belt cover.

usually there is a sticker on the top of the timing belt cover with the 3 letters for the engine code and a barcode

There is no sticker on the timing cover

The 3 letter code won't be on the block as several codes would share the same block but have different external components, power outputs etc etc

There should be an engine number(serial number) on the block somewhere which you may then be able to cross reference to an engine code.

There's a number under the exhaust manifold, on the gearbox side, I'll have to check it tomorrow when there's light.

Looking on wiki, it seems that the engines are all from the same block, I'm guessing the ecu is the main difference between them.

The number under the exhaust manifold is just the part number of the block so that is no good to you.

The engine code and engine number are both stamped into the block on the right hand side facing the gearbox, just below where the block meets the cylinder head.

The three common engine codes for the 1.4 Mk4 Golfs are AHW up to 2000 or thereabouts, AXP from 2000-2003 and BCA from 2003 onwards (also carried over into the early Mk5).

Thanks for that, I'll give it a go in the morning

Why do you need to know the engine code anyway, just out of interest?

The 3 letter code is on the block as well? You learn something new every day.:D

On VWs it is yes, unless the block has been replaced with a new short motor from VW, in which case it will not have an engine code or number stamped on it as the blocks can be interchangeable across several codes as you posted above.

The engine was replaced in the car, but an engine with a different code was used as a suitable one couldn't be sourced. There's an intermittent flash of the eml nowand then and I want to try changing the ecu to see if that cures it. (there's a local lad that can remove the immobiliser from the replacement ecu)

I only got the car yesterday, so it's all speculation until I can check fault codes and what engine is actually in the car.

You won't be able to do that because there are pretty big differences between the engines in terms of engine management.

AHW has a cable throttle and mechanical EGR.
AXP has an electric EGR and a drive by wire throttle.
BCA has an individual coil on plug setup whereas the AHW/AXP both have a single coil with plug leads.

Find out the fault code and take it from there is my advice, it could be straightforward to sort out. What year is the car?

Do you know which engines are interchangeable?

    The model year is 2000

It's driving fine, with the light on so it's not causing any issues there. It was gotten cheap while the mrs. can find a suitable family wagon!

as said above the codes are stamped on the block underneath the thermostat housing and you probably wont be able to see it very easily. being 2000 it would have been an ahw engine that was in it, and was prob replaced with either an axp or bca. This should not cause any eml to come on as they are an identical head and block except for the egr valve on the later axp and bca wer on the head and the ahw had it on the exhaust manifold. so that would have been blanked off and everything else from the original engine would have been swapped onto the replacement engine so there would be no difference in the ecu.

I'm after looking at a few issues at the moment, seems to be a can of worms - this will keep me busy for a while!

EDIT: the original engine code is axp, I can't get my head down to see the code on the engine in it right now.

It was draining the battery; there was a massive drain but I disconnected the stereo and central locking fuse and it seems to be under control. Also, the alternator isn't charging so I've it pulled out and will get a voltage regulator tomorrow for it to see if that will cure it.
