Which bike, budget 1k

I'm gonna buy a bike in the limerick area soon with a budget of around 1k. I've been advised that the guy on o connell ave has the best range but tri-cycles have a top mechanic so good after-sales.

I will probably do most cycling on road but i'm close to aherlow where there's paths with plenty potholes. A mate advised against a hybrid as it's neither one or the other for a number of reasons which make sense. he mentioned a 'cyclocross' and to get a set of road wheels along with the thick ones. He has a few bikes but I haven't cycled in years and dont wanna shell out a load of cash on something I may not use.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as regards brands, size-i'm 6"1 or any other pointers. Am I mad to use a shop or should i buy online?
