my son has a cheque for some money that he has won. He does not hold a Bank of Ireland account or any for that matter as he is too young. Can I come into a branch and get it cashed?

    Hi leeshee,

    Thanks for posting.

A cheque can only be cashed by the person it is made payable to in the branch it is drawn on, provided it is not a crossed cheque.

A parent can open an account on behalf of their child if they are too young to hold an account in their own name, the cheque can then be lodged to the account. You may be best off contacting the issuer of the cheque; they may be able to offer an alternative method of payment.

    Regards

    Seán
